Cymbidium is a flower that brings high economic value to people in Xuan Truong commune, Da Lat city.

Following Mr. Pham Van Nhuong, a cymbidium grower in Xuan Son village, the reporter went to his family's garden of over 3,000 square meters. In this garden, he grows over 3,500 cymbidium pots, mainly FX750 (Queen) and Golden Jackfruit varieties.

"Six years ago, my family grew lagim and coffee like many other households in the area. At that time, a relative of mine grew this orchid and it brought high value. That's why I came to learn the techniques and methods of growing this type of orchid.

At that time, building 1,000 square meters of land to grow orchids cost about 400 million VND including greenhouses and varieties.

After learning the techniques, I went back to build a greenhouse, bought growing media and bought orchid seeds imported from Japan to grow. I studied and worked at the same time, and with the guidance of my relatives, the orchid garden grew very well. Every year I planted a little more, and now I have a 3,000m2 greenhouse to grow orchids," Mr. Nhuong recalled.

Thanks to growing orchids, Mr. Nhuong has an income of several hundred million dong each year.

Mr. Nhuong added that the most difficult thing about growing orchids is the high initial capital. Meanwhile, it takes 3 years to harvest, so the capital recovery is slow, not as fast as other crops.

"This year, my family's orchid garden mainly produces cuttings, blooming during the New Year holidays. Currently, there are about 2,000-3,000 branches left in the garden.

In 1 year, this orchid is only harvested for 3-4 months, each month I cut about 2,000 branches, selling at an average price of about 70,000 VND/branch.

Meanwhile, there are about 100 potted orchid branches that customers have ordered, I am expected to harvest about 350 million VND more," Mr. Nhuong shared.

Also in Xuan Son village, Xuan Truong commune, Mr. Dang Van Hung (41 years old) is also regularly checking his family's orchid garden of more than 3,000 pots. Mr. Hung is also a typical example of boldly switching from growing vegetables to growing orchids locally.

Mr. Dang Van Hung is also one of the households that has boldly converted crops and developed the economy thanks to orchids.

Sharing with reporters, Mr. Hung said that there are still about 20 days left until Tet but customers have almost ordered all the quantity. His family's orchids are mainly supplied to the markets of Hanoi , Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City...

Next to his blooming orchid branches, Mr. Hung shared: "Orchids often bloom on the right occasion of the solar and lunar calendars (from around the 10th lunar month), so they are popular with many people. This type of flower has thick petals, blooms for a long time, and can be displayed for about 45 days, so many people choose to display them for Tet.

This type of orchid is quite easy to care for once you know how to take care of it. The most important thing is to regularly visit and check for pests and diseases. The most common and dangerous diseases for orchids are red spider mites and thrips. With 3,000 branches in the garden, during Tet, after deducting expenses, my family has a profit of about 300 million VND."

Local Cymbidiums are often purchased by locals from a company that imports varieties from Japan, and Japanese fertilizers are also used. Cymbidium growers say that the most important things for this type of flower are fertilizer and water, and the use of pesticides is very limited.

Cymbidiums are mainly harvested in the last 4 months of the year, and orchid flowers can bloom for up to 45 days.

For this type of flower, people grow it using coconut fiber and pine bark. Water is applied every 7-10 days depending on the season, and base fertilizer is applied every 15-20 days.

Talking about growing cymbidiums locally, Mr. Pham Van Dung - Vice Chairman of Xuan Truong Commune People's Committee said that this is a type of flower that brings high value, helping many local people develop their family economy. Therefore, the locality is currently orienting people to expand the area and increase annual flower output.

According to statistics, in Xuan Truong commune, there are about 15 households growing orchids, with an area of about 5 hectares, yielding 10,000 branches per hectare.
