Growing melons in greenhouses using organic fertilizers and microbial fertilizers has been practiced by people in Hon Dat district for about 2 years now. The melon garden of Mr. Thai Van Hung's family, residing in Su Nam quarter, Hon Dat town, is in the harvest season with heavy fruit, this is the result of converting from specialized rice production in 2 crops to growing melons in greenhouses with high economic efficiency.
Previously, Mr. Hung's family specialized in farming, but he switched to growing melons after meeting his nephew who specializes in purchasing and distributing melons from Ho Chi Minh City to provinces and cities across the country. Through consulting, learning from experience and collecting information from newspapers and radio, Mr. Hung and his wife decided to invest in growing melons in greenhouses.
Mr. Hung shared: “The model brings high economic efficiency but the initial investment capital is quite large. The model has an area of 1,000m2 with an initial investment capital of about 400 million VND. Every year, I grow 4 crops (3 months/crop), each crop invests about 35 million VND. If the harvest is good, the yield is about 3.5 tons/crop, with a selling price of 30,000 - 40,000 VND/kg, bringing a fairly stable income”.

Ms. Nguyen Thuy Trang, residing in Su Nam quarter, Hon Dat town, also boldly invested more than 500 million VND to implement the model of growing melons in greenhouses. Ms. Trang is a teacher. Through research and study, Ms. Trang found that growing melons in greenhouses is quite interesting. Many local households have successfully applied it, so her family boldly implemented it. For each melon crop, the family invests nearly 40 million VND in making pots, biofertilizers, etc. Each year, the family grows 4 melon crops, earning nearly 200 million VND.
Ms. Trang said: “At first, I planned to grow vegetables, but there are many people growing vegetables here, so I switched to growing melons. At first, because I did not understand the “characteristics” of melons, I had to take care of them very hard and did not achieve high productivity and the melons did not reach the desired sweetness. After a few crops, I accumulated experience and the melons achieved high sweetness and productivity. I use microbial fertilizers to fertilize the melons, ensuring the health and safety of consumers.”
To implement this model, melon growers must follow the correct process, using only organic fertilizers, microbial fertilizers, and treated irrigation water. Although the initial investment capital is relatively large, the model of growing melons in greenhouses has many prospects, bringing high income, opening up an advanced and sustainable production direction for farmers.
