Thanks to successfully growing the dancing orchid, which is considered a "noble flower", with branches that can be cut continuously for 7-10 years before having to be replanted, Mr. Nguyen Trong Binh and his wife - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Xuan Truong Commune (Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province) have an additional income of about 40 million VND per month.
Following Mr. Nguyen Trong Binh - Vice Chairman of Xuan Truong Commune People's Committee (Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province), we came to a greenhouse of over 1,000 square meters, where pots of orchids are blooming bright yellow.
This is not the economic development model of any good local farmer, but it is the place where the "noble flower" brings in tens of millions of dong in income for Mr. Nguyen Trong Binh's family.
Mr. Nguyen Trong Binh, Vice Chairman of Xuan Truong Commune People's Committee (Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province) is growing dancing lady orchids. This noble flower brings high economic efficiency to his family.
Mr. Binh said that with just over 1,000 square meters of greenhouse growing dancing lady orchids, he and his wife have harvested about 3,000 flower branches, selling for 13,000 - 15,000 VND/branch.
"Previously, on the above land area, my family grew coffee and various vegetables. However, after many changes in crops, we still did not see economic efficiency. Therefore, my wife and I researched what kind of plants to grow to have higher productivity and economic efficiency.
In 2020, after researching, I realized that there were very few people growing dancing orchids locally, even though this type of flower brings in high income.
Therefore, I discussed with my wife to convert, build a greenhouse, and grow orchids on the family's 1,100m2 area," Mr. Nguyen Trong Binh shared.
Every month, Mr. Binh's family harvests about 3,000 branches of dancing lady orchids.
According to Mr. Binh, after making the decision, he and his wife spent about 1 billion VND to build facilities such as greenhouses, land, flower varieties, growing media, and iron trellis for growing orchids. Dancing Lady orchids will be harvested after about 2 years of planting and will last from 7-10 years.
Continuing her husband's words, Mrs. Dinh Thi Thu Van, Mr. Binh's wife, said that at first, she and her husband had no experience in taking care of dancing lady orchids, so they had to go to large gardens to learn.
At the same time, contacting warehouse owners and flower purchasing agents was also promoted by the couple from the early days of growing orchids.
Ms. Dinh Thi Thu Van said: "Every month, we cut the orchids 3 times, on average, we cut about 3,000 branches of flowers each month. After harvesting, we pack the flowers into bags and then the owner of the warehouse will come and take them to sell.
Dancing lady orchids are only grown by a few people in Xuan Truong commune.
Dancing lady orchids are cut and packaged into bags before traders come to take them away for sale.
"Taking care of dancing orchids is not difficult, mainly fertilizing and spraying pesticides periodically. I only add fertilizer every 6 months, and I spray pesticides every 7-10 days with a light dose to ensure the flowers grow normally," Ms. Dinh Thi Thu Van shared.
Grown in greenhouses and placed on iron racks about 80cm above the ground, the orchids are usually not affected by pests or diseases. Therefore, Mr. Binh and his wife's flower care is quite easy.
Holding a bouquet of dancing orchids in his hand, Mr. Nguyen Trong Binh said: "Currently, dancing orchids are quite popular in the market and have high demand.
Therefore, the income of growers is relatively stable compared to other crops. With more than 1,000m2 of land growing dancing orchids, my wife and I have an income of 30-40 million VND/month.,,".
Each branch of dancing orchid is sold by Mr. Binh in Xuan Truong commune (Da Lat city, Lam Dong province) for 13,000 - 15,000 VND. Mr. Binh said that this noble flower can be cut and sold for 7-10 years before needing to be replanted.
"Currently, in Xuan Truong commune, only my family and one other household are growing dancing lady orchids. This is a new direction, creating stable income for people. We are popularizing and guiding some households to invest in growing this high-value flower," Mr. Binh added.
According to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thien - Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Da Lat City, growing dancing orchids is a model that brings high economic efficiency to the people. However, models like that of Mr. Nguyen Trong Binh's family are still very few.
However, Mr. Thien said that before converting and investing in new crops, people should carefully learn about the techniques, especially the consumer market, to avoid risks during the investment process.
