According to Dong Thap Provincial Youth Union, from April 7 to 14, union members joined hands to make 34 trips carrying 432m³ of water, 450 barrels of mineral water, and 3,500 bottles of mineral water to support people in the area suffering from drought and lack of domestic water.
Specifically, Lai Vung District transferred water to Go Cong Dong District, Tien Giang Province; Cao Lanh District transferred water to Phu Vang Commune, Binh Dai District, Ben Tre Province; Lap Vo District provided fresh water to people in Thanh Phu and Mo Cay Nam Districts, Ben Tre Province; Chau Thanh District transferred fresh water to Go Cong Dong and Tan Phu Dong Districts, Tien Giang Province and Ngoc Hien District, Ca Mau Province.
The total cost of the project was over 320 million VND, supported by benefactors. Youth Union members participated in transporting water onto the truck.
Mr. Phung Van Xam - resident of Hamlet 9, Tan Phuoc Commune, Go Cong Dong District, Tien Giang Province - said that even with money, it is not certain that he can buy water at this time. The arrival of water trucks like this makes the people very happy.
"Before, we used tap water and filtered water, but the canal water gradually dried up and there was no water for daily use or washing. This water source is very precious," Mr. Xam said.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Day - Secretary of Chau Thanh District Youth Union, Dong Thap province - said that 30 volunteer members of the district alone transferred 13 trucks with 210m3 of domestic water and 350 barrels of mineral water to the trucks for transport to Tien Giang and Ca Mau provinces.
"The total cost of 35 million VND was sponsored by benefactors. This clean water comes from tap water shared by households. The union members used their family's vehicles and the driver group transported it to the gathering point to transport it to the provinces for the people," said Mr. Day.
It is expected that this "water supply" activity will last until the end of April, with an estimated 30 more trips with 400m³ of fresh water for people in drought and salinity areas.
