China updates 829 growing area codes and 131 packing facility codes for Vietnamese durian

According to a representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, this is positive information for Vietnamese durian in the context of a decline in export turnover compared to the same period last year.

The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) informed that on May 21, the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) updated 829 growing area codes and 131 packing facility codes of Vietnamese durian.

The Department believes that expanding this list creates favorable conditions to increase the export of Vietnamese durian to the Chinese market.

Localities and businesses need to proactively take advantage of this opportunity, while ensuring strict compliance with regulations on plant quarantine and food safety in order to export sustainably.

As reported by SGGP Newspaper, in the first 4 months of 2025, Vietnam's durian export turnover to China only reached about 130 million USD, equivalent to 35,000 tons, a sharp decrease compared to more than 500 million USD in the same period in 2024.

The main reason is that China tightened the inspection of cadmium and yellow O residues, requiring 100% of shipments to have inspection certificates from recognized centers. This forced many exporting enterprises to suspend transactions, supplement documents, and disrupt the supply chain.

The decline in the export market has caused the domestic durian price to drop sharply, down to only 35,000-120,000 VND/kg at the garden, while in the same period last year, the highest price was up to nearly 200,000 VND/kg.

At a meeting on May 8 to remove difficulties for durian exports, Minister of Agriculture and Environment Do Duc Duy directed urgent solutions to restore durian exports.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment will coordinate with China Customs to handle technical problems, speed up the issuance of growing area codes and approval of packaging facilities. At the same time, the ministry will also urgently develop a plant quarantine process for durian for export in 2025.
