According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in the first 6 months of the year, the US imported about 905 million USD worth of seafood from Vietnam, an increase of nearly 18% over the same period last year. In May alone, seafood exports to the US reached nearly 195 million USD - the highest level since the beginning of the year, up 61% over April. This is the period when Vietnamese businesses accelerate exports to "avoid" the new US tax policy.

However, after the surge, the US market cooled down soon after. In June, seafood exports to this country decreased by nearly 18% compared to the same period last year, of which shrimp decreased by more than 36% and tuna decreased by more than 40%.

"Many US importers are wary of risks arising from trade tensions, so they limit orders, reduce volume or only place monthly orders," VASEP quoted a business as saying.

Meanwhile, China is becoming a bright spot. In the past six months, Vietnam's seafood exports to this market reached more than 1.1 billion USD, up nearly 45% over the same period. China surpassed the US for the first time to become the largest importer of Vietnamese seafood.

According to VASEP, China is increasingly tightening quality standards, but more stable trade policies have made it easier for businesses to plan production and sign long-term contracts.

The association believes that the overall picture of the industry is gradually recovering, and some large enterprises have also recorded positive results. For example, Nam Viet Joint Stock Company (ANV) - a large pangasius exporter - recorded revenue of more than 73 billion VND in 6 months, an increase of 96% over the same period and the highest level in a decade.

The company's net profit reached more than VND12 billion, up 9%, also the highest semi-annual figure ever. The company representative said that this year, the Asian and American markets grew well, especially China, which was a bright spot. The company has completed more than 92% of its revenue plan and 71% of its profit target for the year after only the first half of the year.

VASEP believes that the trend of shifting orders between markets will continue in the second half of the year, as Vietnamese businesses proactively adapt to changes in tax policies, technical standards and traceability requirements. In addition to penetrating deeper into China and the CPTPP bloc, many businesses also aim to maintain market share in the US through a "green", sustainable production model, increasing deep processing content to increase value.

The US is a high-end market with good prices, but with increasingly unpredictable policy risks, Vietnamese businesses say they are forced to shift. Some companies have restructured their export markets, expanding to South Korea, Japan, the EU and the CPTPP bloc. At the same time, they have also invested heavily in technology, cold chains and traceability to increase competitiveness.

In the first 6 months of the year, the country's seafood export turnover reached about 4.4 billion USD, an increase of nearly 7% over the same period in 2024. Although there have been signs of improvement compared to last year, this increase has not yet returned to its peak in 2022.
