KIEN GIANG COLLEGE: Proud of tradition, steady steps towards the future

Steady development journey

Kien Giang College, formerly Kien Giang Technical High School, was established in 1965 and officially operated from April 1966, training 4 occupations: Electricity, carpentry, mechanics and tailoring, with 102 students.

After many transfers, name changes, and mergers, in 2018, the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs issued a decision to merge Kien Giang Community College and Kien Giang College of Economics and Technology into Kien Giang College, marking an important development step, opening a new phase in the school's operations.

In 2019, the School of Culture and Arts (Department of Culture and Sports ) was merged into Kien Giang College, from which the school expanded its training in the field of culture and arts. Up to now, the school has many training facilities in Rach Gia ward (No. 425 Mac Cuu street and No. 217 Chu Van An street) and Hon Dat commune; 1,000-seat dormitory, at No. 2 Ngo Thi Tap street and No. 11 To Hien Thanh, Rach Gia ward.

According to Dr. Nguyen Minh Quan - Principal of Kien Giang College, the school currently trains 24 majors at college level, 17 majors at intermediate level, 7 elementary occupations, driver training of all classes, and regularly trains over 40 occupations, meeting the needs of learners. The school expands university training cooperation and postgraduate recruitment cooperation with many majors and training systems to meet the needs of learners and the socio-economic development of the locality.

The school does a good job of training according to the needs of businesses and localities, linking to train short-term courses in tourism and engineering according to the requirements of large businesses and corporations in Phu Quoc special zone, training short-term courses in the economic, engineering and agricultural sectors in localities in the province.

Every year, the school always achieves 100% of the enrollment target assigned by the Provincial People's Committee, with a training scale of over 10,000 students, of which college and intermediate level students are over 3,700; primary and regular training students are nearly 5,000; and in association with universities, training about 1,300 students. The rate of new graduates with jobs is always over 95%, affirming that the school's training quality meets the requirements of the labor market.

The staff and lecturers are increasingly growing in quantity and quality. The Provincial People's Committee assigned 279 staffing targets to the school, currently there are 322 staff, civil servants and workers, including 10 PhDs, 138 masters, 98 university, 18 college, 22 intermediate and 36 people at other levels. This is the core force, dedicated, highly qualified, meeting the requirements of vocational education innovation in the current period.

The school’s facilities are increasingly invested in to be more spacious and modern. Lecture halls, workshops, and dormitories are equipped synchronously, meeting the needs of teaching and learning. Modern and diverse teaching equipment helps learners practice professional skills, linking training with the practice of businesses and the labor market.

Firm steps into the future

Dr. Nguyen Minh Quan said that in order to improve the quality, the school pays attention to the development of training programs and regularly reviews and improves them; the training programs always invite business representatives to participate in appraisal and comments. The school regularly organizes the compilation of textbooks, learning materials, makes teaching aids, innovates teaching methods; applies modern teaching aids in teaching hours. The school always attaches importance to training practical skills for students, meeting social requirements. In 2022, the school was recognized as meeting the standards for quality assessment of vocational education institutions and gradually strives to become a high-quality college in the vocational education system.

The school promotes cooperation with more than 200 enterprises in and outside the province, expanding internship and employment opportunities for students. The school also proactively connects students to internships and training in countries such as Japan, Korea, the US and some European countries, helping students access the international environment, improve their professional capacity and integration ability.

Over 60 years of establishment and development, Kien Giang College has trained and fostered more than 120,000 students and trainees in many different professional fields, making an important contribution to providing quality human resources for the province and the Mekong Delta region.

The school's staff and lecturers are always united, strive to compete, and achieve many outstanding achievements in teaching and research. The school was honored to receive the Third Class Labor Medal from the President in 2001, the Second Class Labor Medal in 2006, and the First Class Labor Medal in 2016; the Government awarded 9 excellent emulation flags and many certificates of merit from the Prime Minister, ministries, central branches, and the Provincial People's Committee. Many teachers of the school have achieved the title of Excellent Teacher, National Emulation Fighter, National Excellent Teacher; many groups and individuals have been awarded the Third Class Labor Medal and other noble awards.

From Kien Giang Technical High School to Kien Giang College today is a journey of strong transformation and growth. Up to now, Kien Giang College has become one of the key vocational training institutions of the province and the Mekong Delta. Dr. Nguyen Minh Quan shared: "Promoting the tradition of 60 years of formation and development, Kien Giang College continues to affirm its training role in the region, constantly innovating, creating, integrating internationally, aiming to become a high-quality college, contributing to providing important human resources for the socio-economic development of the province and the Mekong Delta".
