The ceremony was also attended by Mr. Le Hai Binh, Alternate Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism; and many prominent faces in the Vietnamese cinema industry.
The Order of Arts and Letters is one of France's noble awards to honor individuals with outstanding contributions to the fields of culture and arts. With her long-standing dedication to Vietnamese cinema and her efforts in strengthening international cooperation, especially with France, Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan was honored to receive the Officer Order - the second rank besides Knight and Commander.

Speaking at the award ceremony, French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati emphasized that this noble medal honors the extraordinary journey of a woman who overcame all limits and barriers, devoting herself to cinema.

Ms. Dati said that in 2023, Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan founded the Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF) - the first annual film festival in Vietnam. After the great success of the first season in 2023, in the second season (2024), DANAFF organized a thematic seminar and a special film screening program to honor the relationship between Vietnamese and French cinema.
Therefore, according to Minister Rachida Dati, Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan's influence has spread beyond Vietnam's territory, becoming a symbol of the strong Vietnam-France relationship.
"She has transformed the Film Festival into an artistic playground, as well as a place for professionals to connect. From this year onwards, DANAFF will organize international co-production meetings, with the support of the French National Cinema Center (CNC). I am pleased to announce that CNC will award a development scholarship to the best film project within the framework of this event," Ms. Dati affirmed.

Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, President of the Vietnam Cinema Promotion and Development Association, expressed her emotion when receiving the noble Officer Medal of Literature and Arts, and mentioned the film "The Scent of Green Papaya" by director Tran Anh Hung as a testament to the exchange and harmony of Vietnamese-French souls and colors.
Recalling her journey of tirelessly working with the 7th art, Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan said she had many opportunities to collaborate with French filmmakers and French cinema.
In 2014, on the occasion of the year of Vietnam-France cross-cultural exchange, the Department of Cinema ( Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism ), of which she was the Director, coordinated with the French Embassy in Vietnam, the Saint Malo city government and French cultural and cinema activists to successfully organize the Vietnam Film Festival in France in Saint Malo; to introduce and honor Vietnamese films as well as French films about Vietnam. Or in 2017, at the 70th Cannes Film Festival, the Department of Cinema organized the Vietnam Night, announced the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with CNC, marking the close cooperation between Vietnamese and French cinema.

After finishing her term as Director of the Department of Cinema (2012-2018), Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan founded DANAFF with many cooperative activities with the French Embassy and French filmmakers, especially in discovering and encouraging young talents.
"I hope that in the near future, DANAFF in particular and Vietnamese cinema in general will receive more regular and effective support from the French Ministry of Culture, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the French Institute to nurture and develop a generation of talented, professional young Vietnamese filmmakers," Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan shared.

Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan is currently the President of the Vietnam Cinema Promotion and Development Association - an organization she founded in 2019 after finishing her term at the Department of Cinema. At the same time, she is also the founder and Director of the Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF) - the first annual film festival in Vietnam. In 2017, she was awarded the State Prize for Literature and Arts - Cinema. Following the success of the previous two seasons, DANAFF 2025 is expected to have a special program on international co-production cooperation, with the support of the French Embassy and the French National Cinema Center. |
