BHG - Applying science and technology (S&T) to production to increase productivity, output, meet market demands and respond to climate change is becoming an inevitable trend in agricultural production. In the province, S&T transfer programs are bringing about many outstanding results, contributing to promoting sustainable agricultural production development along the value chain and improving farmers' lives.

Ha Giang has a climate and soil suitable for many types of specialty crops and livestock such as: Sanh oranges, Shan Tuyet tea, Mint honey, Seedless Hong, Gia Dui rice, yellow cows, black pigs, black chickens... To promote this advantage, the province focuses on many synchronous solutions, including promoting the application of science and technology to preserve rare genetic resources, certify geographical indications and brands for products. In 2024, the functional sector coordinated with the National Agricultural Extension Center to organize training courses on market access, solutions to develop indigenous pig farming in the direction of biosafety, fattening cattle farming associated with linkage and product consumption. Continue to preserve and develop livestock breeds and seedlings such as: yellow cows, local pigs, take care of 350 domestic bee colonies and existing parent gardens such as Taiwanese pears, Yunnan peaches, Tam Hoa plums with a total of 507 trees; Preserve 30 Shan tea lines, precious medicinal plants on a scale of 0.5 ha; preserve high-quality, low-seeded Sanh oranges on a scale of 0.5 ha in Hung An commune (Bac Quang). Sow and nurture over 10,000 fruit trees of all kinds; raise, preserve and conserve 7 native fish species; apply science and technology to artificially reproduce Dam xanh, Anh Vu, Chay dat, Mi fish, Lang dot fish, Bong fish, and original field carp to increase the number of individuals of rare native fish species.

In addition, many typical production models and projects applying science and technology are bringing about clear changes, changing the thinking and methods of agricultural production in many localities. Typical examples include: The model "Applying intensive technical measures to prevent and control yellow leaf and root rot diseases on orange trees associated with product consumption" in Bac Quang and Quang Binh districts with a scale of 8 hectares; productivity increased by over 15% compared to outside the model, economic efficiency increased by 15-20% compared to mass production, over 70% of product output is committed to be consumed by enterprises. The model of improving the efficiency of intensive mixed fish farming in ponds in 2 communes of Quang Ngan and Viet Lam (Vi Xuyen) with a scale of 3 hectares, the yield reached 2.12 tons/0.1ha, profit over 56 million VND/0.1ha, increased by 21% compared to mass farming. Model of fattening beef cattle and treating livestock waste with biological products, scale of 105 heads/20 participating households in Ta Lung and Sung La communes (Dong Van) linked to product consumption. Model of planting and intensive cultivation of pear trees linked to eco-tourism development and product consumption linkage in Meo Vac and Dong Van districts with a scale of 5 hectares. Model of raising spotted catfish in cages on rivers and reservoirs linked to product consumption linkage and eco-tourism development in Mich A village, Thuan Hoa commune (Vi Xuyen), scale of 280 m³, average fish weight of 1.5 kg/fish, profit of over 333 million VND/100 m³. Department of Agriculture and Rural Development connected with Thien Tam Fund to support nearly 4 billion VND to implement agricultural development models for 4 cooperatives including: Cat Ly Cooperative (Vi Xuyen) developing highland yellow cattle breeding; Thanh Nien Agricultural Service Cooperative (Yen Minh) develops beekeeping for honey; Hoang Su Phi Agricultural and Forestry Products Trading and Processing Cooperative produces Shan Tuyet tea; Song Chung Cooperative (Quang Binh) develops cage fish farming on rivers and reservoirs.

Implementing the plan of the Provincial People's Committee on developing organic agriculture, the Department of Agriculture guides and supports organizations and individuals participating in the production and processing of agricultural products according to VietGAP, organic, ISO, HACCP standards; promulgating the process of cultivating Shan Tuyet tea and regulations and tools for managing intellectual property rights associated with traceability and quality management of products protected by Ha Giang geographical indications; supporting the design of packaging with geographical indication logos for 6 enterprises and cooperatives; granting the right to use Ha Giang geographical indications for Shan Tuyet tea products to 12 enterprises and cooperatives; receiving and assessing the granting of food safety certificates to 80 production facilities. Focusing on supporting star rating for OCOP products; to date, the whole province has 203 products granted certificates, including 197 3-star products, 4 4-star products and 2 5-star products at the national level; newly establishing 33 cooperatives; Strengthening promotion and product introduction on e-commerce trading floors and social networking platforms; maintaining and expanding raw material areas. During the year, 16 cooperatives and 5 enterprises were attracted to invest in production value chains with a total approved value of over 116 billion VND.

Science and technology are the “key” towards smart and modern agriculture. However, the application of science and technology in production in the province still has many limitations, many production models and projects have not been widely replicated. Therefore, all levels and sectors need to continue to pay attention, invest and support science and technology to accompany farmers, increase the value of local agricultural products, and develop a sustainable rural economy.
