Seven-year-old boy nearly loses his hand after turning on a cinnamon grater by himself.

After turning on a cinnamon grater at home, a 7-year-old boy from Lao Cai province suffered severe injuries to his left hand, with many tendons, blood vessels, and nerves torn. Doctors at the National Children's Hospital had to perform a surgery lasting over 3 hours to preserve the child's hand function.

According to the family, the process of peeling cinnamon bark used to be mainly done manually by hand. However, to increase productivity, the family recently started using a machine with a high-speed rotating roller system to separate the cinnamon bark.

While the adults weren't paying attention, the child started the machine and, unfortunately, their left hand got caught in the rotating roller system. In a state of panic and pain, the child still tried to turn the machine off before being discovered by family members.

Six hours after the accident, the child was transferred to the National Children's Hospital by the family following initial first aid at a local medical facility. Upon admission, doctors in the Emergency and Toxicology Department assessed the child with severe injuries to the forearm and hand, with multiple structures crushed, posing a significant risk to motor function.

After urgently controlling the bleeding, assessing the extent of the damage, and conducting a multidisciplinary consultation, the orthopedic doctors, in collaboration with the anesthesia and resuscitation team, decided to perform emergency surgery that night to preserve as much hand function as possible for the child.

According to Dr. Nguyen Vu Hoang, a specialist in Orthopedics and who directly participated in the surgery for the child, this was a particularly complex case of trauma where many flexor tendons, blood vessels, and nerves were severely torn and crushed.

With some tendons severely damaged, doctors had to carefully consider which structures to repair in order to preserve the basic motor function of the hand. In addition to reconnecting tendons, blood vessels, and nerves, the team also reconstructed the tendon support system so that the fingers could move correctly along their axis afterward.

The surgery lasted over 3 hours; in addition to reconnecting blood vessels and tendons, the doctors also had to cover the soft tissue and rearrange the anatomical structures.

Sharing his feelings after the surgery, the child's father emotionally stated that the family never imagined that a machine used in production could cause such a serious accident.

Following surgery, the child's hand regained its warmth and pink color, and circulation in the fingers improved. Just a few hours after the operation, the child was able to gently move their fingers as instructed by the doctor. After two weeks of treatment, the child recovered well and was discharged from the hospital. However, to fully restore hand function, the child will need continued monitoring and rehabilitation treatment in stages.

Based on the above case, doctors advise families and producers to install barriers to prevent children from accessing production areas, especially homemade machines. These should have safety nets/covers, power switches, and emergency shut-off mechanisms to minimize risks.

In the unfortunate event of an accident, especially in the case of severed body parts (limbs), it is necessary to quickly disconnect the power source, provide proper first aid to stop the bleeding, and take the child to the nearest specialized medical facility. For severed limbs, they should be wrapped in clean gauze, placed in a sealed bag, and properly refrigerated to increase the chances of successful reattachment.
