In a message to the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, especially those in Ituri province – the current epicenter of the outbreak – Tedros affirmed the solidarity of the WHO and its partners in preventing the spread of the disease and protecting communities in the DRC. He stressed that “a ceasefire, even a temporary one, will save lives and create space to support those who need help most.”
According to the WHO, since May 15th, when the Ebola outbreak was declared a global health emergency, the Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded 10 confirmed Ebola deaths and 223 suspected deaths, out of a total of approximately 1,000 confirmed and suspected cases. However, the actual scale of the outbreak may be larger, as the virus had been silently spreading within the community for some time.
The pandemic situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo is exacerbated by the ongoing armed conflict, which has led to population displacement and disruptions to supply routes, forcing healthcare workers to operate in constantly dangerous conditions. According to the WHO, conflict, instability, displacement, and food shortages are complicating efforts to contain the pandemic.
Sharing the WHO's assessment of the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also stated that the Ebola outbreak has spread throughout the eastern provinces of the country. In addition to Ebola, the overall humanitarian situation is also worrying, with response efforts overwhelmed and aid being hampered.
