Before “Bo Gia”, Tuan Tran was a name that was obscured. The revenue of 427 billion VND of “Bo Gia” was a shock at the box office in 2021, right after the theater had to close for a long time due to the pandemic. The shock at the box office created a great attraction for the cast of “Bo Gia”, in which Tuan Tran stood out.
Playing the role of Quan – the son of Mr. Ba Sang (Tran Thanh) – Tuan Tran scored points with his natural and lively acting. Quan and Mr. Ba Sang represent two generations, the relationship between them is full of conflict but also full of love. Tran Thanh and Tuan Tran in the confrontational scenes show distinct nuances, the struggle, resistance and efforts to heal between generations in a family.
Quấn is considered a turning point in Tuan Tran’s acting and reputation. After “Bo gia”, Tuan Tran was invited to play the role of Ut Luc Lam in “Dat rung phuong Nam” by director Nguyen Quang Dung.
With Ut Luc Lam, Tuan Tran clearly showed his masculinity, wildness, and naturalness in acting. Overcoming the controversies surrounding the content of the film “Southern Forest Land”, Tuan Tran still scored certain points with Ut Luc Lam.
“Mai” is the second work Tuan Tran collaborated with Tran Thanh. To be fair, Tuan Tran was overshadowed in “Mai” when standing next to his two co-stars Phuong Anh Dao and Hong Dao.
Compared to Mai, the character Duong does not have a complicated past, does not have to face piled up tragedies, does not go through complicated psychological developments - therefore, from the beginning, Phuong Anh Dao's acting space was more than Tuan Tran's.
With Ms. Dao, a multifaceted woman with a flexible personality, from clever to skillful, from soft to sharp, actress Hong Dao also has a better grasp of the difficulty of the role - compared to Tuan Tran.
With the complicated role of Mai, Phuong Anh Dao's dedication and immersion in the role were fully utilized, helping the actress shine. It was very difficult to find someone who could replace Phuong Anh Dao to play Mai, but it was not too difficult to find an actor to replace Tuan Tran to play Duong.
The role of Duong still shows the personality traits that Tuan Tran has shown before, wildness, masculinity, playfulness... In other words, the color of the role of Duong overlaps with Quan in "Bo gia" and Ut Luc Lam in "Dat rung phuong Nam".
Having the opportunity to participate in 3 projects with “huge” revenue, Tuan Tran is on the way to affirming himself as the new “million-dollar male lead” of Vietnamese cinema. Before Tuan Tran, there were “million-dollar male leads” such as Thai Hoa, Kieu Minh Tuan, Tran Thanh...
Compared to Tran Thanh himself, the actor has good acting skills, versatility, and the ability to nurture impressive emotions. From “The Godfather”, “Southern Forest Land”, “Nha Ba Nu” to “Mai”, Tran Thanh has proven his ability to transform into many different types of roles, from a harsh and conservative father to a mean son-in-law who depends on his wife’s family, Tran Thanh has impressive scenes.
Sang to “Mai”, still a father role, but the color is completely opposite to Ba Sang in “Bo gia”. If Ba Sang is the support for his children, the father in “Mai” is the factor that pushes his daughter into the depths of tragedy, time and time again. Whether playing the main or the negative role, Tran Thanh plays the character well.
Or for example, Thai Hoa - who once dominated the box office with comedic roles, but could also make audiences cry when playing tragic roles. Thai Hoa has always been considered a talented actor when it comes to transformation, diverse and rich roles, "carrying" all different types of roles.
To be part of the new generation of million-dollar actors on the Vietnamese screen, what Tuan Tran needs to do in the future is to diversify and enrich his acting style and show himself in many types of roles with contrasting colors and psychological developments.
