Once claimed by billionaire Musk as an 'appreciating asset', Tesla cars are now falling in value

Electric car company Tesla has accepted to buy back used Cybertrucks for the first time, but the price of only $65,000 for a $100,000 pickup truck after one year of use has surprised many people.

According to the Independent newspaper on May 19, billionaire Elon Musk's electric car company Tesla has begun accepting purchases of used Cybertruck electric pickup trucks, the first time since this vehicle line was launched on the market.

However, the price the company is offering is surprising many car owners: only 65,000 USD for a Cybertruck that was sold for 100,000 USD in 2024 and has only run about 10,000 km.

A depreciation of up to 35% for a one-year-old vehicle — shared by a member of the Cybertruck Owners Club forum — is the average loss in value that a pickup truck typically loses after five years of ownership.

Electric vehicle news site Electrek has called this purchase price "crazy", showing clear signs that the Cybertruck line is a commercial failure.

This reality is completely different from the statements made by car company boss Elon Musk before, when he affirmed that Tesla models will increase in value over time.

“If you buy a car now, it becomes an investment in the future. I think the most important thing is that if you buy a Tesla today, you are buying an appreciating asset — not a depreciating asset,” he said on the Lex Fridman podcast in 2019.

The Cybertruck's shocking price drop also reflects the vehicle's oversupply, with inventory reportedly hitting a record 10,000 units this month.

According to data from Tesla-info.com, there are many Cybertrucks still in Tesla's warehouse without buyers, with a total estimated value of up to 800 million USD.

The drop in demand for the Cybertruck also reflects Tesla’s poor performance globally, with sales in the UK down more than 50% in April.

In Europe, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, Tesla's sales also fell 45% in the first quarter of the year, although all-electric vehicle sales in the EU in the same period increased by 23.9%.

Tesla's decline is said to stem from increasingly fierce competitive pressure from rivals such as Ford, GM and BYD, along with the controversial personal image of CEO Elon Musk - who played an important role in the Trump administration and frequently appeared next to the president.

Not long ago, Mr. Musk announced that he would significantly cut back on political activities to focus on his business.
