Commemorating the 160th anniversary of the martyrdom of National Hero Truong Dinh

(Baoquangngai.vn) - At the ceremony to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the martyrdom of National Hero Truong Dinh (August 20, 1864 - August 20, 2024), organized by the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Quang Ngai province, Quang Ngai received the National Monument Ranking Certificate for the Truong Dinh Temple Historical Relic.

The memorial ceremony was solemnly held on the morning of August 18 at Truong Dinh Temple, in Tinh Khe Commune (Quang Ngai City). Attending the ceremony on behalf of the provincial leaders were Central Party Committee member, Provincial Party Secretary, Provincial People's Council Chairwoman Bui Thi Quynh Van; Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Council Nguyen Cao Phuc; Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Tran Hoang Tuan; comrades in the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee; representatives of the provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee.

Provincial leaders and delegates attended the ceremony.

Also attending the ceremony were Deputy Head of the Representative Office of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in Da Nang Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy; Head of the Propaganda Department of Tien Giang Provincial Party Committee Chau Thi My Phuong.

At the ceremony, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Tran Hoang Tuan read a speech about the life and career of National Hero Truong Dinh. He was born in 1820, in Tinh Khe commune, Son Tinh district, now Quang Ngai city. Around 1844, he followed his father to Gia Dinh (Tien Giang) to start a business, reclaim land, and establish plantations.

In 1854, responding to the land reclamation policy of the Nguyen Dynasty, Truong Dinh used money to recruit poor people to establish Gia Thuan plantation in Go Cong district (Tien Giang). After that, he was appointed Deputy Quan Co, then Quan Co.

In February 1859, when the French army attacked Gia Dinh citadel, Truong Dinh rose up to raise the flag of uprising against the invaders and won many glorious victories, inspiring the army and people and he was honored as the Great Marshal of the West.

The Truong Dinh uprising was the most typical uprising, the leading flag in the movement to fight against French colonialism in the South and the whole country in the second half of the 19th century. Under the banner of "Binh Tay Dai Nguyen Soai", the uprising gathered many classes to participate, took place in a large area in the Gia Dinh area and throughout the provinces of the South, causing heavy losses to the French colonialists, creating a great resonance.

At dawn on August 20, 1864, the French suddenly surrounded and attacked the insurgents. After fighting heroically until being seriously wounded, Truong Dinh committed suicide to avoid falling into the enemy's hands.

Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Tran Hoang Tuan and Deputy Head of the Representative Office of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in Da Nang Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy presented the National Monument Ranking Certificate for Truong Dinh Temple to the leaders of Quang Ngai City and the temple management unit.

Admiring the shining spirit of the national hero, the people of Quang Ngai and Tien Giang built a temple to worship him and hold a memorial service for him on August 20 every year. In Quang Ngai, Truong Dinh Temple was built in 2007. In 2014, Truong Dinh Temple was ranked as a provincial relic by the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee.

Over the years, the historical relic of Truong Dinh Temple has always been protected by the Party committees, authorities and people of Quang Ngai, promoting its historical value, investing in restoration to have the scale and appearance as it is today. This place has become one of the red addresses to educate patriotism and national pride among the people. With its typical historical and cultural values and significance, Truong Dinh Temple in Tinh Khe commune (Quang Ngai city) was granted a certificate of National Monument by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on February 27, 2023.

Binh Tay Grand Marshal Truong Dinh sacrificed his life, but his name and his career of fighting the enemy and defending the country will forever be associated with Go Cong land, the pride of his hometown Tien Giang, Quang Ngai and the whole country.

“160 years have passed since the day national hero Truong Dinh sacrificed his life, but the image of the insurgent and the mark of the uprising he led are still deeply imprinted in the golden pages of history of the resistance against the French. Together, we respectfully offer incense in memory of future generations, hoping that his spirit will forever live in the sacred spirit of the mountains and rivers, forever living with the homeland and the country that is being renewed today,” comrade Tran Hoang Tuan emphasized.
