In 2024, which is expected to be a busy year with international tournaments, the Vietnamese tennis team will open the new year with the 2024 Davis Cup World Group II promotion play-off. After a difficult 2023 when we had to compete in Group III of the Asia- Pacific region on clay courts, which is not our forte, the Vietnamese Davis Cup team still excelled in getting a ticket to the 2024 World Group II play-off round. The upcoming promotion play-off promises to be even more difficult when our opponent is the South African Davis Cup team, currently ranked 58th in the world.
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) in coordination with the Vietnam Tennis Federation (VTF) with the support of the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Bac Ninh province and Hanaka Group Joint Stock Company, the upcoming 2024 World Group II promotion play-off match between the Vietnam Davis Cup team (ranked 70th in the world) and the South African Davis Cup team (ranked 58th in the world), Vietnam was chosen as the host country. The match between the two teams will take place at the Hanaka Paris Ocean Park Tennis Court Complex (Tu Son City, Bac Ninh).
Ly Hoang Nam will be the mainstay of the Vietnamese team in the upcoming match.
The 2024 World Group II Promotion Play-Off between Vietnam and South Africa will take place on February 2 and 3, 2024, with 5 matches including 4 singles matches and 1 doubles match (the team that reaches 3 points first will win the overall match but will play all 5 matches). The losing team in this match will be relegated to Group III, scheduled to take place in July and August 2024. The winning team in the play-off will compete in World Group II and face the losing team in the World Group I Play-Off round taking place in September 2024.
To participate in the 2024 World Group II promotion play-off, the Vietnamese team defeated Jordan 2-1 in the Asia-Pacific Group III play-off. Meanwhile, the South African team had a convincing 3-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the Africa Group III play-off. As expected, the list of the Vietnamese team in the upcoming play-off will include our 4 best athletes at the present time. On the other side, the South African team is in the process of changing blood with young players, notably tennis player Philip Henning, born in 2000 and currently ranked 753rd on the ATP singles rankings.
