University Admissions 2025: New regulations on entry threshold of 'main' subjects

Training institutions need to set entry thresholds for foundation subjects to ensure that candidates have studied that subject in high school if necessary.

Regulations on student scores when applying for medical school

A new point in the 2025 university and college admissions guidance document of the Ministry of Education and Training provides regulations that directly affect candidates regarding the entrance threshold for foundation subjects to ensure that candidates have studied that subject in high school.

Specifically, the Ministry of Education and Training has set out requirements for the development of subject combinations and independent tests. Subject combinations or independent assessment tests used for admission must be developed scientifically and practically, ensuring the selection of candidates with basic knowledge and core competencies appropriate to the training program.

To meet the above requirements, subject combinations or independent assessment tests used for admission must meet a number of specific requirements.

In case a university or college training program requires basic knowledge in a certain subject, the training institution must specify the entry threshold for that subject to ensure that candidates have studied that subject in high school. For example, if a medical training program requires basic knowledge in biology, it is necessary to specify the requirements for high school biology scores or high school graduation exams.

Training institutions must specify the minimum percentage of core content scores related to the major that candidates must achieve in the total score of the exam. For example, when considering admission to mathematics by independent assessment, training institutions must clearly specify the percentage of scores for the mathematics section of the exam.

However, according to the Ministry of Education and Training, there are exceptions, the above requirements may not apply to language training majors where learners start from a basic level (for example, learning French from scratch). Similarly, majors such as technology pedagogy or information technology pedagogy may also have appropriate adjustments.

University regulates math and literature scores for law majors

Following the guidance of the Ministry of Education and Training, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry announced the admission thresholds for this year's admission methods. Notably, the admission thresholds are related to the foundation subjects for some of the school's majors.

For example, the method Admission is based on the 12th grade high school academic results combined with outstanding achievements (if any), the school relies on the average score of the entire 12th grade transcript of the 3 subjects in the admission group and outstanding achievements (if any) or the candidate is in the top high schools that have signed a cooperation agreement with the school. The threshold for receiving applications is the total score of 3 subjects in the admission group of at least 21. For the pharmaceutical industry, the threshold for receiving applications is the total score of 3 subjects in the admission group of at least 24 and having a good grade 12 academic performance. For the law industry, the admission score for each subject of math and literature is at least 6.

Similarly, in the admission method using the results of the competency assessment exam organized by Ho Chi Minh City National University in 2025, the entrance threshold for the general program is 650 points. For the law group, the threshold to ensure the entrance quality has a total minimum score of 720, while the Vietnamese and math components each have a minimum score of 180 points.

Regarding this issue, on April 9, the Deputy Minister of Education and Training sent a document to training institutions on organizing university and college admissions for preschooleducation in 2025. The Ministry noted that for training programs, majors, and groups of majors using many combinations and admission methods, review the combinations and admission methods; select the combination of subjects for admission to ensure that it is based on the requirements of basic knowledge and core competencies that candidates need to have to study. Particularly for teacher training majors, the combination of subjects for admission or the entrance threshold must have specific requirements for the corresponding subject knowledge.
