Entering the first leg of the 2022 AFF Cup final, both Vietnam and Thailand played with a mentality of emphasizing certainty. Right after the opening whistle, the Vietnamese team pushed up their formation and looked for an opportunity to score the opening goal. In the 4th minute, the Vietnamese team had the first dangerous opportunity when a Thai defender accidentally cleared the ball as a pass to Tuan Hai, unfortunately striker number 18 could not score. Thailand responded with Kraisorn's shot that could not beat goalkeeper Dang Van Lam.

After the 30th minute, the game started to improve for coach Alexandre Polking and his team. Thailand created opportunities, however, Van Lam's talent and the crossbar helped the Vietnamese team keep the net intact after the first half.
Entering the second half, the Thai team pushed up their formation to find an equalizer. In the 48th minute, the Vietnamese team lost the lead when Thailand equalized 1-1. Theerathon sent a long pass and Poramet broke the offside trap, then eliminated Que Ngoc Hai to shoot past goalkeeper Van Lam. This was an unfortunate situation for the Vietnamese team. The defense was not focused and Thailand punished them with a simple move.

In the 64th minute, Theerathon made a very clever pass for Peeradol to break the offside trap and beat goalkeeper Van Lam in a one-on-one situation.
Having taken the lead, the Thai team took the initiative to play slowly and defend to protect the score, making it difficult for the Vietnamese team to attack. However, after a series of substitutions, the Vietnamese team tried to push forward to regain control of the game. In the 88th minute, the Vietnamese team unexpectedly scored a goal from Van Thanh after a shot from outside the penalty area.
