Posting on his Telegram channel, Mr. Klymenko stated: "In Sumy, Russia has attacked a medical facility twice: so far, 6 people have been killed," including a policeman.

The first airstrike “killed one person” and damaged several floors of the hospital, Mr Klymenko said, before patients and staff began to be evacuated. “During the evacuation of patients, the enemy attacked again,” Mr Klymenko added, adding that another police officer had been injured.

The Sumy regional government said both airstrikes involved drones targeting Shahed. The second airstrike hit a residential area.

Previously, on July 8, Ukraine also accused Russia of conducting large-scale airstrikes on many locations across the country, killing at least 36 people.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of deliberately targeting a children's hospital in the country.

He said it was impossible for Russia not to know where its missiles were going and "must bear full responsibility for its crimes".

However, Russia has denied any involvement in the attack on the Ohmatdyt Children's Hospital. The Russian military confirmed that it had fired a series of long-range missiles on July 8, but said the targets were military factories and airports in Ukraine.

"Statements by Ukrainian officials that Russia deliberately attacked civilian targets in Kiev on July 8 are completely false," Russia Today ( RT) quoted a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry .

The statement also said: "Numerous images and videos from Kiev demonstrate that the damage was caused by a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile, launched from a launcher located in the city."

Russia is believed to have used air-launched Kinzhal missiles in the attack. Senior Ukrainian officials have claimed that the weapons are vulnerable to Patriot missile systems.
