Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yury Ihnat accused Russia of launching a large-scale combined air strike on Ukraine today, December 29, using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and several types of missiles, according to Reuters.

Speaking on television, Mr. Ihnat said that Russia used hypersonic, cruise and ballistic missiles, including the X-22, which is extremely difficult to intercept, in the new attack.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also said that Russia launched about 110 missiles today in one of the largest air strikes on Ukraine, but most of them were shot down, according to Reuters.

Explosions were reported in the capital Kyiv and the Ukrainian cities of Kharkiv, Lviv and Dnipro.

Smoke rises over Kyiv after a missile and drone attack believed to have been carried out by Russia on December 29.

Local officials say four people were killed and more than 10 injured in a Russian attack on the city of Dnipro today. They also confirmed that a maternity hospital and a shopping mall were hit, leading to fires.

Leaders of the southern Ukrainian province of Odessa also said that two people were killed and at least 15 injured when Russian missiles hit several residential buildings in the city of Odessa.

In addition, the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy announced that people in four regions of northern and southern Ukraine are facing power outages following a new Russian missile and UAV attack.

There is no information yet about Russia's reaction to the new accusation from Ukraine, but Russia has long emphasized that it does not target civilians.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry announced this morning that in the past 24 hours alone, Ukrainian military losses amounted to about 60 soldiers in the fighting in the direction of Kherson province, southern Ukraine. The Russian Defense Ministry also said that members of the combat force "continue to fight actively," according to TASS news agency.

German general assesses Russia's losses

Meanwhile, German Major General Christian Freuding, in charge of overseeing the country's military support for Ukraine, recently said that Russia has suffered huge human and material losses in Ukraine, and the Russian army will be weakened after the conflict, according to AFP.

In an interview with the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper published today, Mr Freuding said: "You know that according to Western intelligence figures, 300,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or so badly wounded that they cannot be mobilized for the war anymore."

Mr Freuding also said Russia was believed to have lost thousands of tanks and infantry fighting vehicles. “The Russian armed forces will be weakened both in terms of personnel and material after this war,” Mr Freuding commented. However, he said Russia was succeeding in continuing to recruit soldiers “including using prisoners”.

“And of course, we are seeing huge investments in the arms industry,” Freuding stressed. The German general also admitted that Russia is showing “more resilience” than the West thought when it began its military campaign in Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

There is currently no information about Russia's reaction to General Freuding's assessment.
