Ukrainian intelligence announced that it was organizing a cyber attack targeting the Russian Defense Ministry 's server system, bringing down one of them.
On January 30, the Main Directorate of Military Intelligence of Ukraine (GUR) announced that it had exploited a security vulnerability in a software to attack the server of the Russian Ministry of Defense, but did not name the software.
"Due to the cyberattack operation, the Russian Defense Ministry's server for special communications has stopped working," GUR said in a statement. "The exchange of information between Russian units using this server has been disrupted. The operation is continuing."

According to GUR, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) certified the software with the above-mentioned vulnerability as fully meeting information security standards. This software is installed on the equipment of many strategic Russian facilities, including military facilities.
Russia has not commented on GUR's statement.
Russian officials announced on January 30 that a technical problem had caused some of the country's websites to stop working, but did not mention the Ministry of Defense.
According to Russia's Ministry of Digital Development, Information and Mass Communications, the problem was related to the Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC). The agency confirmed that the problem had been resolved, but said that internet disruptions "may last for a certain period of time."
Ukraine rarely announces attacks on Russian cyber infrastructure. Shortly after launching a military operation against Ukraine in late February 2022, Russia was hit by a cyberattack.
The hacker group Anonymous then announced that it was "engaging in activities targeting Russia", taking down many government websites and taking control of several TV channels.
