High-tech application, towards safe and sustainable shrimp production

(KGO) - On the morning of June 7, the Department of Fisheries - Fisheries Control of Kien Giang province coordinated with the Fisheries Association of Kien Giang province and the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Kien Giang province to organize a scientific workshop "Solutions for developing shrimp farming applying new technology, ensuring traceability, towards safe, effective and sustainable production".

The workshop was attended by scientists from Can Tho University, the Aquaculture Research Institute; the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, and businesses, cooperatives and industrial shrimp farming households in Kien Giang province.

At the workshop, delegates discussed, exchanged and shared experiences and advanced technological solutions in the field of shrimp farming such as: Solutions to prevent and control diseases in farmed shrimp; safe and effective high-tech shrimp farming techniques in adverse conditions; design of a circulating shrimp farming system, integrated polyculture towards sustainable development; technical process of super-intensive shrimp farming using RAS-CTU technology; digital transformation in shrimp farming; efficiency of system management and product traceability; solutions for rational use of input materials in shrimp farming to optimize production efficiency.

According to the provincial Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Control, in recent years, Kien Giang province has focused on developing aquaculture, with the area and output of aquaculture increasing continuously over the years. In particular, brackish water shrimp farming is carried out intensively in the Long Xuyen Quadrangle.

In the period 2020-2025, the area and output of industrial and semi-industrial shrimp farming increased in both productivity and output. Intensive shrimp farming enterprises have contributed significantly to the success of the industry. Shrimp farming output of enterprises increased from 8,693 tons in 2020 to 19,583 tons in 2025.

In reality, enterprises and households raising industrial and semi-industrial shrimp in Kien Giang province are facing many difficulties and challenges from climate change, epidemics, high prices of production inputs, unstable market prices, unsynchronized infrastructure development; limited application of technical advances in production and model replication...

Faced with challenges and difficulties, delegates said that state management agencies need to advise the Provincial People's Committee to pay attention to and invest in upgrading the infrastructure system of transportation, electricity, and irrigation for aquaculture; issue preferential policies on land and taxes to encourage shrimp farmers to expand production scale and improve production techniques; strengthen strict management of production and seed supply to reduce disease risks; establish concentrated farming areas with close participation and linkage between shrimp farmers - processing enterprises - scientists and state management agencies.

In addition, shrimp farmers need to proactively update new technologies and apply digital transformation to production, in order to improve productivity, quality, optimize costs, production prices and increase competitiveness in the face of strict requirements from the international market, products must have origin, ensure food safety...
