Application and transfer of scientific advancements

Việt NamViệt Nam19/12/2023

Research and application of scientific and technological advancements in production and daily life not only promotes local socio -economic development but also contributes to sustainable poverty reduction for ethnic minority communities.

Over the past 10 years (2012-2023), many projects under the Program to support the application and transfer of scientific and technological advancements to promote socio-economic development in rural, mountainous, and ethnic minority areas have been implemented in Binh Thuan province. Specifically, to date, 10 projects have been jointly organized by the Department of Science and Technology, and are currently underway: “Building a model for propagation using tissue culture technology and intensive cultivation of dwarf Cavendish bananas in Binh Thuan province”. The project includes 9 technological processes, training 6 technicians, and producing nearly 18,000 dwarf Cavendish banana seedlings, aiming to build a model and transfer the process of planting and intensive cultivation of dwarf Cavendish bananas (using tissue-cultured banana seedlings) on a total area of 5 hectares for ethnic minority people in La Da commune, Ham Thuan Bac district.

The project "Building a model for breeding and commercially raising hybrid meat goats in Binh Thuan province" has been implemented recently.

In some arid areas, projects such as: “Building a model for applying water-saving irrigation technology to agricultural production in Bac Binh and Tuy Phong districts”; “Applying rainwater harvesting technology, building a model of agroforestry combined with irrigation in the arid coastal sandy areas of Binh Thuan” in three districts: Tuy Phong, Bac Binh, and Ham Thuan Bac. Through these projects, technicians are trained, and local people are supported in effectively applying the transferred technology to agricultural production to help improve their income… Or, for example, the project “Building a model for treating alum-contaminated water for domestic use in areas affected by climate change impacting water sources in localities in the province” has implemented 400 alum-contaminated water treatment models for 400 households in Ham Thuan Bac, Ham Thuan Nam, Ham Tan, and Tuy Phong districts.

Recently, the provincial authorities have also implemented the project "Building a sustainable integrated cashew cultivation model in Binh Thuan province" to transfer integrated cashew cultivation processes. This model involves planting new cashew trees, intensive cultivation, and improving low-yield cashew orchards in Tra Tan commune (Duc Linh district), La Ngau commune (Tanh Linh district), and Son My commune (Ham Tan district), contributing to increased income for local people. In addition, they have coordinated the implementation of several projects with expected economic efficiency, such as "Building a model for cultivating Cordyceps sinensis and straw mushrooms indoors for households to promote socio-economic development in Binh Thuan province." They have also implemented the project "Applying scientific and technological advancements to produce functional foods to support the treatment of gout from the lichen species Roccella Montagnei in Tuy Phong district, Binh Thuan province," aiming to build a model for developing a region of endemic lichen. This initiative aims to provide medicinal resources, link the application of science and technology along the commodity value chain, increase income for people in Tuy Phong district, and maintain and conserve natural resources.

Recently, in the fourth quarter of 2023, the project "Building a model for breeding and commercially raising meat-type hybrid goats in Binh Thuan province," which helps people in rural and mountainous areas adopt advanced techniques to develop goat farming, was also approved. The results included the establishment of a concentrated goat farming model with 90 female goats (Bach Thao breed) and 10 male goats (Boer breed) at a unit under the Department of Science and Technology, along with a dispersed hybrid goat farming model at 20 households in Tuy Phong and Bac Binh districts. This has improved the quality of the local goat herd, which mainly consists of Grass goats and Bach Thao goats, with limitations such as small size and lower meat yield compared to some hybrid breeds.

Supporting people through the application and transfer of scientific and technological advancements is essential, thereby not only promoting local socio-economic development but also contributing to sustainable poverty reduction in ethnic minority areas. Therefore, in the coming time, this activity will be further strengthened in the province by advising and proposing projects suitable to rural, mountainous, and ethnic minority conditions to ensure the most practical results.
