The study, conducted by a team from Southern Medical University and Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences (Guangzhou, Guangdong - China), looked at the ability of tea drinking to protect against high blood pressure and premature death, as well as its interaction with alcohol consumption.

The study participants were divided into 3 groups: non-tea drinkers, low tea drinkers (1-2 cups/day), and high tea drinkers (3-4 cups/day).
After an 18-year follow-up period, 9% of study participants died.
The results showed that the mortality rate from all causes was lower in people who drank a lot of tea than in people who did not drink tea. In terms of high blood pressure, drinking tea also helped them stabilize their blood pressure better.
These beneficial substances in tea appear to help slow the rate of hardening of the arteries, allowing blood to flow better and thereby stabilizing blood pressure.
However, the mortality-reducing effect of tea only appeared in people who did not drink alcohol. Alcohol also masked the blood pressure-lowering effect of tea.
The reason is that alcohol reduces the antioxidant activity of polyphenols in tea, which are also the substances that make tea bring unexpected health benefits and increase longevity.
Therefore, the researchers concluded that maintaining the habit of drinking 3-4 cups of tea per day is very good for health. Tea has been proven in other studies to be a beverage that brings a series of benefits, including weight loss, fat loss, good for the brain and other cardiovascular and metabolic problems.
The researchers also warn that drinkers should not expect tea drinking to offset the risks of drinking alcohol. This may be more harmful because it leads to subjective thinking.
