Be careful to limit alcohol consumption at one time.

Doctor Le Thi Thuy Hang - University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, branch 3 - said that during Tet, drinking alcohol is part of the culture of communication and congratulations, which has existed for a long time in the customs and practices of Vietnamese people.

But to ensure safety for yourself and those around you, everyone needs to follow these principles:

We need to know our limits, not try to drink too much. Limit the amount of alcohol in one drink. Limit alcohol as follows:

Drinking less than or equal to 2 units of alcohol/day in men and less than or equal to 1 unit of alcohol/day in women and underweight people.

Note: 1 unit of alcohol = 14 grams of pure alcohol; equivalent to 354ml of 5% alcohol beer, or 150ml of 12% alcohol wine, 45ml of 40% alcohol spirits.

You should space out the time between doses to give your body time to process.

In particular, you should eat foods rich in protein such as meat, fish, or fried foods to slow down the absorption of alcohol.

Dr. Hang notes that when drinking alcohol, pay attention to drinking slowly and leisurely, you can take small sips instead of drinking quickly. Do not mix many types of alcoholic beverages to avoid overloading the body.

It is worth mentioning that alcohol can interact with many drugs, causing dangerous side effects. You should only take medicine with water and at least 2 hours apart from alcohol.

The benefit of drinking plenty of water or fruit juice is to help reduce the alcohol concentration in the body.

Warning signs of alcohol poisoning?

According to Dr. Huynh Van An - Head of the Intensive Care and Anti-Poison Department, Gia Dinh People's Hospital (HCMC), all alcohol is harmful to health, even alcohol that meets quality standards and is produced according to regulations.

Normal alcohol is ethanol, but for profit reasons, many establishments use methanol (industrial alcohol, wood alcohol) not used in food mixed with ethanol to get a cheap price.

The risk of poisoning and life-threatening effects on users is increasing with counterfeit ethanol, especially alcohol produced from industrial methanol.

When using ethanol, the drinker will have headaches, fatigue, and vomiting, but the body will naturally eliminate harmful substances.

However, if methanol is drunk, the patient will experience headaches, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, loss of vision, and coma.

The above symptoms usually do not occur immediately during a drinking session; most patients fall into critical condition after a day of drinking.

During the Tet holiday, due to high consumption, the beer and wine market often has a situation of widespread counterfeit goods.

Therefore, we should check carefully before using, stay away from unlabeled alcohol, unknown origin, containing methanol or other dangerous chemicals.

Note: If you have been drinking alcohol, do not drive, use public transport or ask someone to take you home.
