It is worth noting that no country other than Vietnam has produced and commercially developed this vaccine to date. Vietnam has also exported more than 600,000 doses of African swine fever vaccine. This event affirms the position of veterinary science in particular and Vietnam's agricultural sector in general globally.
After more than 100 years of the African swine fever virus appearing and causing damage to many livestock farms in countries around the world, the world still has no vaccine to prevent the disease. In Vietnam, the outbreak in 2019 caused a serious crisis in the livestock industry.
Vietnamese scientists quickly began research. In 2023, Vietnam officially announced the commercial circulation of the African swine fever vaccine.
By 2025, when the World Organization for Animal Health first issued African swine fever vaccine standards, Vietnam's vaccines would have fully met and exceeded the minimum standards.
To date, more than 3 million doses of vaccine have been commercially circulated, helping many localities in the country eliminate African swine fever. In addition, more than 600,000 doses have been exported to the Philippines and Indonesia. Currently, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Myanmar and Nigeria have also registered to test Vietnam's vaccine.
As of early 2025, African swine fever is still complicated in over 40 countries and territories. In Southeast Asia alone, there are 9 countries with African swine fever. The vaccine produced in Vietnam has proven effective in protecting pig herds, promising to open up an effective solution to eradicate this disease not only for Vietnamese farmers but also around the world.
