The role of big data platforms and technology applications in digital transformation of the sports industry

Digital transformation is an inevitable trend of world sports through analysis, exploitation of Big Data, application of artificial intelligence (AI), application of virtual reality technology (VR) in training, competition training and organization of sports events... Vietnamese sports are not out of this trend.

The reality is that the level of technology in training within Vietnam's sports sector is currently quite low. This is why competition results often differ significantly from training outcomes, and it's difficult to accurately predict performance in major competitions like the Asian Games or the Olympics, even though medal targets are easily met at the SEA Games. A lack of investment in data collection and utilization can lead to the overlooking of young talents or insufficient investment in athletes with outstanding performance indicators. Therefore, the sports sector is determined to implement a drastic digital transformation in the coming period.

Digital transformation in the sports industry is a shift in operations from relying on experience and subjective information to operating based on accurate data. Digital transformation is a revolution in how operations and value creation are conducted, where technology plays a instrumental role, but the core lies in a change in the organization's mindset and strategy.

So, what role do big data platforms and technology applications play in the digital transformation of the sports sector?

According to Mr. Phan Van Hung, Director of Technology at Dreamax Technology Joint Stock Company, at the Digital Transformation in the Vietnamese Olympic Movement Workshop: big data platforms and technology applications play an extremely important role in the digital transformation of the sports sector. Specifically, this applies to the training and competition activities of athletes and coaches; the management and organization of tournaments; and communication and mobilization of social resources.

According to Mr. Hung, the data sources generated in the sports industry are very diverse, including: data from sensors (IoT, wearables), match analysis videos , statistical data, information from social networks, and business data such as ticket sales and marketing. These data require a system capable of collecting, storing, analyzing, and processing them in real time, while also providing predictions and supporting decision-making.

Besides big data platforms, technology applications also play an equally important role. Together with big data, AI technology applications in the field of sports will help analyze athlete performance, prevent injuries, optimize tactics and training, identify and nurture potential athletes, and enhance the fan experience.

"At the same time, it helps improve athletic performance and change the way fans interact with their favorite sport. However, its implementation needs to be accompanied by ethical and technical regulations to ensure transparency and fairness," Mr. Phan Van Hung emphasized.

Mr. Phan Van Hung also pointed out that, in the near future, artificial intelligence and Big Data in the field of sports could be integrated with IoT sensors and 5G to process data in real-time at high speed, supporting instant decision-making…

The above analysis shows that applying big data platforms along with technological applications in the digital transformation process will help the sports sector optimize sports management; enhance analytical capabilities and strengthen the application of sports science and medicine .

Furthermore, digital transformation is an effective tool that helps sports managers reduce manual labor, increase accuracy, and save time; it also helps analyze athlete performance and training. Through measuring devices, sensors, and data analysis software, it minimizes the risk of injury during training and competition. In addition, digital transformation contributes to bringing sports activities closer to the community through mobile applications and smart technology devices. Based on a technological platform, people can participate in sports activities in their own way, according to their conditions and available time. The digitization of sports activities also provides an opportunity to improve the ability to exploit and protect image copyrights, promote sports marketing, and develop a sustainable, fair, and transparent sports economy.
