VAR (short for Video Assistant Referee) is a form of advanced technology applied to support referees through video. VAR is used in football to help referees make the most accurate decisions through recorded videos. VAR is only used in the case of a "clear error" or "serious missed situation" related to: Goal/no goal; penalty/no penalty; direct red card (not a second yellow card/second warning), misidentifying the offending player (in the case of a referee warning/yellow card or sending off).
18 referees and assistants attend the 3rd VAR referee training course
After completing theoretical training steps and 2 concentrated training sessions at the LAB (Laboratory), 18 referees and assistants participating in the VAR referee training class will continue to enter an important training course lasting 11 days, from June 8 to 18.
In the third training course, the referees will go through the practical training steps on the VAR vehicle with increasing levels of difficulty, specifically: step 3a is training for 2 days with two teams competing on the field to practice short simulation situations of 10 minutes; step 3b is training for 6 days with two teams competing on the field to practice simulation situations of 30 minutes; step 3c is training for 3 days with two teams competing for a full 90 minutes. In this training step, the coordination between the main referee, VAR referee and technician is carried out on the VAR vehicle. The entire training process of the third training will be supervised and guided by FIFA experts.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Duong Nghiep Khoi - General Secretary of VFF emphasized that this training course is considered very important with higher level tests, requiring referees to concentrate to acquire knowledge and apply it in practice sessions. If the referees pass the test and evaluation by FIFA experts, the time when VAR is allowed to be applied in Vietnam will soon be determined.
During the entire training period of the third phase, referees and assistant referees were introduced to and practiced on the VAR vehicle with real-life situations of increasing difficulty.
Two VAR vehicles deployed by VPF Company with sponsorship from Hoanh Son Group have been completed and put into operation in this training session. In the coming time, FIFA will also send information about the plan to sponsor two VAR vehicles for Vietnam. The VAR vehicles deployed by VPF with all equipment of the VAR system are imported under the supervision of quality and technical standards of FIFA. In parallel with training and testing of referees on VAR vehicles, in this training session, FIFA technical experts will also evaluate the technology and standards for the two VAR vehicles. The communication systems will also have to undergo inspection and licensing from competent domestic authorities before being approved for use.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Ngoc, General Director of VPF Company shared: “The VAR project has gone through a long period of preparation and implementation. Up to now, the technical and material preparations for the implementation of VAR have been completed by VPF Company and its partners. This third training course for referees is especially important, deciding the time to deploy VAR in Vietnam. With careful attention and preparation in terms of logistics, VPF Company hopes that the 18 referees attending this first VAR training course will pass FIFA's testing and evaluation steps so that the VAR application plan will soon be included in national professional football tournaments in the near future.”
