What is fish oil?
Fish oil is a widely used dietary supplement made from the tissue of certain fatty fish such as mackerel, sardines, salmon, trout, and herring.
This supplement contains a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). There are 22.5 grams of omega-3 fatty acids in 100 grams of fish oil. These omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential because our bodies cannot produce them on their own and must be supplemented through our diet.
Benefits of fish oil for hair
According to a study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences in 2018, fermented fish oil extract from mackerel containing DHA can promote hair growth. In addition, regular use of fish oil can also help with dry skin and acne.
Fish oil can support hair growth mainly through the effects of omega-3 fatty acids in the following cycle:
- Omega-3 fatty acids help improve blood circulation to the scalp. Increased blood flow delivers more nutrients and oxygen to hair follicles, helping to support healthy hair growth.
- Omega-3 has anti-inflammatory properties, which help soothe and reduce inflammation in the scalp, while creating a healthier environment for hair growth.
- Omega-3 contributes to maintaining a healthy scalp by keeping it well nourished and free from problems such as dandruff or excessive dryness.
For healthy hair, try using fish oil in the following ways:
Consume foods rich in omega-3
If you don’t want to take fish oil supplements, you can eat a diet rich in omega-3s. Include fish in your daily diet, especially fatty fish like mackerel, salmon, tuna, and sardines, which are good sources of omega-3s. To get your daily dose of omega-3s, try to eat at least two servings of fatty fish a week.
Fish oil supplement
If your diet does not provide enough omega-3 fatty acids, you may want to consult your doctor and take a fish oil supplement. The two main types of omega-3s found in fish oil, EPA and DHA, should be included in a high-quality supplement. Follow the dosage instructions on the product label.
Use directly
If you are reluctant to eat fish or take fish oil supplements, you can use liquid fish oil and massage it into your scalp in gentle circular motions. Leave it on for 30-60 minutes and then wash your hair. Note: test the fish oil on a small area of skin to see if you are allergic and make sure to wash your hair thoroughly after applying it directly because fish oil has a strong smell and is unpleasant for many people.
