100% of the victims are in the 18-22 age group, mostly students living away from home. "Online kidnapping" cases have exploded, especially in July, which is the school year in many provinces and major cities across the country.
New statistics released by the Ministry of Public Security show that: 18,900 billion VND is the total financial loss caused by online kidnapping scams in 2024, double that of 2023. 1,500 online kidnapping cases in 2023 – and 22,200 reports of online kidnapping in just 9 months of 2024.
1 in 220 smartphone users have been scammed. That's not a small percentage!
And every month, 70% of Vietnamese people receive at least one scam text message or call.
More worryingly, 90% of victims of “online kidnapping” are female students between 18 and 22 years old.
- Bad guys impersonate police, prosecutors, accuse victims of crimes...
- They force victims to move, cut off communication, turn on airplane mode, and keep them in a state of absolute isolation.
- Then, they faked a "kidnapping", called the family to demand ransom, and distributed sensitive images to threaten them.
- The consequence of a scam is that families suffered billions of dong in financial losses, exhaustion, and long-term psychological trauma for the victims.
Since July 2025, when the school year begins, this type of crime is exploding again in major cities: Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, Hanoi , Da Nang, Tay Ninh, Quang Ninh. They use new technology such as AI to fake voices and faces to fool whole families.
“Online kidnapping” doesn’t happen in real life… but from your phone.
Stay calm - verify - report to the police.
Because no one is alone in the fight against cyber fraud.
