At the event, more than 500 delegates representing ministries, sectors, government agencies, businesses, the United Nations, embassies, non-governmental organizations, and research institutions joined hands to commit to promoting gender equality and ending gender-based violence.

Attending the ceremony were: Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, Chairman of the National Committee for the Advancement of Women in Vietnam Dao Ngoc Dung; UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Ms. Pauline Tamesis; Vice Chairman of the State Capital Management Committee Nguyen Ngoc Canh; Party Secretary, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Vietnam Airlines Corporation Dang Ngoc Hoa and delegates who are leaders of ministries, central agencies, ambassadors, representatives of international and Vietnamese organizations.

In recent years, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the global economic recession has negatively affected the lives of people in general and in Vietnam in particular. This impact is more serious for vulnerable groups, including women and children. The pressures of illness, economy and life have caused violence against women and girls to increase during the pandemic, threatening achievements in gender equality in most countries around the world.

Faced with this situation, the Party, State and Government of Vietnam have always made efforts to implement measures to ensure social security, promote gender equality and prevent and respond to gender-based violence, especially violence against women and children. This has contributed to helping women and children in difficult circumstances stabilize their lives, reduce pressure and the risk of violence and abuse.

The Month of Action for Gender Equality and Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence in 2023 reflects Vietnam's current priorities and focus in promoting substantive gender equality, aiming to promote the capacity, role, and potential of women and men for the development of the community and family and to equally benefit from the results of that development.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung affirmed Vietnam's commitments to ensuring gender equality in general, enhancing the power and position of women in particular, and emphasized the role of communication work on gender equality: To address gender inequality in Vietnam, in addition to laws, policies, and programs to ensure social security, communication work is identified as the most important task and solution to raise awareness, change behavior, contribute to eliminating prejudice, and move towards achieving real gender equality.

The implementation of the Gender Equality Communication Program to 2030 and the Month of Action for Gender Equality and Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence from 2016 to present have created positive effects, attracting the attention and response of people, communities and agencies and organizations, contributing to raising awareness, changing behavior, and narrowing the gender gap in most areas.

The launching ceremony of the Action Month is the opening event for the peak communication campaign on gender equality and prevention and response to gender-based violence in 2023 nationwide. Immediately after the launching ceremony, thousands of activities in response to the Action Month will take place organized by ministries, branches, agencies and localities nationwide. The Action Month for Gender Equality and Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence is held from November 15 to December 15 every year. After 7 years of implementation (2016-2022), more than 10 million people have been communicated and accessed to the messages of the Action Month, contributing to raising awareness and changing the behavior of officials and people towards gender equality and prevention and response to gender-based violence. Every year, 100% of localities and many ministries, branches and central agencies have developed plans and implemented activities in response to the Action Month.

Minister Dao Ngoc Dung proposed and hoped that ministries, branches, agencies, Party committees at all levels, authorities, organizations, unions, media agencies and each of us would commit, participate and take specific, practical and effective actions towards gender equality, for the development, prosperity and happiness of each individual, family and the whole society.

“A peaceful world, free of violence, disease, poverty, a democratic, fair, civilized society and full of love is the legitimate wish of every human being. That wish can only come true soon if we all join hands to cultivate it with understanding, responsibility and love. There will be no gender equality without the participation of men in family work and without ending violence against women and girls. Women need to improve their autonomy and assertiveness to participate more actively in all areas of socio-economic life. Along with that, men also need to build confidence that they can take on and perform well the role of family care, which is part of the solution to end violence against women,” emphasized the Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs.

“We all know that the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, natural disasters, wars and conflicts are all increasing gender-based violence and exacerbating economic hardship for households. To mitigate the impact of these threats, investing in prevention is essential. Investing in prevention not only benefits women, children and families, but also makes national economies stronger and more resilient,” said Pauline Tamesis, UN Resident Coordinator in Viet Nam.

Mr. Dang Ngoc Hoa - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines shared: “Vietnam Airlines wishes to join hands to raise awareness and promote actions for gender equality in society. This is also the role and responsibility of the National Airline with the mission of contributing to the common sustainable development. We are committed to strongly responding to the Month of Action for Gender Equality and Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence with practical, innovative and creative actions. We are always ready to cooperate and exchange with agencies and organizations to improve operational efficiency, widely spread good messages and values".

At the event, Vietnam Airlines and the United Nations in Vietnam signed a commitment to join the Women's Empowerment Principles of Vietnam Airlines Corporation, thereby becoming the 174th Vietnamese enterprise along with more than 8,500 enterprises participating in this network globally.

In response and contribution to spreading the meaningful message, within the framework of the National Action Month, Vietnam Airlines will deploy 02 "Orange the sky" flights on the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi - Incheon (Korea) routes. These two special flights will blend orange with the "Orange the world" campaign - solidarity in action to end gender-based violence, taking place over 16 days, from November 25 to December 10 globally. This is the second time the National Airline has joined in the response through the "Orange flight" activity.

Orange was chosen as the color of the Global Campaign to End Gender-Based Violence because it is a bright color, bringing hope to women and children who are victims of violence as well as those working in this field. It is also a highly noticeable color - showing the dangerous and alarming level of violence against women and millions of children globally, calling for strong participation from relevant parties to eliminate this problem.
