Vietnam has 64 people in the top 100,000 most influential scientists in the world in 2023

The selection was based on the Scopus database by a group of scientists led by Professor John PA Loannidis and colleagues from Stanford University (USA). Vietnam has 64 scientists in the top, many of whom achieved quite high rankings.

The ranking was announced by Elsevier Publishing House, owner of the Scopus database, selecting a group of scientists in the top 100,000 most influential scientists in the world based on the most cited scientific articles out of a total of nearly 210,000 ranked scientists.

The ranking list was released by a group of scientists led by Professor John PA Ioannidis and colleagues from Stanford University (USA), built on the basis of exploiting the Scopus database.

The evaluation criteria are based on scientific impact indicators (total number of citations, Hirsch h-index; Schreiber hm-index adjusted for co-authorship, number of citations of articles published as sole author, main author and last author, and a composite index).

Scientists are divided into 22 major fields and 174 sub-fields (disciplines/specialties). The data shows their impact over their career and over the past year.

According to the list of the top 100,000 influential scientists in the world in 2023, 64 individuals are working at universities in Vietnam. Of these, 47 are Vietnamese scientists. Compared to 2022, this list has increased by 12 people.

The rest include many foreign scientists working at Vietnamese universities. Besides the famous long-standing universities in Vietnam such as Hanoi Medical University, Hanoi National University.

VinUni is the youngest university in Vietnam with 3 scientists teaching at the school named in this list.

They are Prof. David Bangsberg - who was recently appointed as Acting Rector of VinUni University (ranked 42nd in the field of Public Health), Prof. Laurent El Ghaoui (ranked 300th in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Image Processing) and Prof. Pranee Liam Puttong (ranked 428th in the field of Nursing).

The list also includes famous scientists such as Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Xuan Bach (Hanoi Medical University), Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc (Hanoi National University), Associate Professor, Dr. Le Hoang Son (Hanoi National University), Dr. Vuong Quan Hoang (Phenikaa University). Of which, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Hoang Son and Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc are in the top 5 for consecutive years 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

The list also has many new faces, such as Associate Professor Dr. Pham Van Viet (Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, ranked 57,893), Associate Professor Dr. Bui Xuan Thanh (Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, VNU, ranked 98,112).
