The Open Doors report by the Institute of International Education (IIE) released in late 2024 said that the US welcomed more than 1 million students from more than 200 countries and territories. This number increased by about 6.6% compared to the previous school year, contributing about 50 billion USD to the economy .
In 2024, India will have the most students in the US with more than 331,000 international students studying undergraduate, graduate, non-degree courses and working after graduation under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. Next is China with more than 277,000 international students, down 4%, ranking second.
The next three positions belong to South Korea (more than 43,000), Canada (nearly 29,000), Taiwan (more than 23,000). Vietnam ranks 6th in the number of international students - 22,066, an increase of 166 people compared to the previous year.
The American Institute of InternationalEducation also reported that the three fields with the most international students are Mathematics and Computer Science (nearly 281,000 people, up 16.9%), Engineering (more than 210,000, up 3.6%), and Economics and Management (nearly 160,000, up 1.6%).
In terms of gender ratio, the number of Vietnamese international students is predominantly female with 53% and male is 47%. This is in contrast to the general trend of the world (44.5% of international students are female) and of other countries with the highest number (female students from India account for only 38%, this figure in China, Korea, Canada is 48%, 48%, 49% respectively). In general, female international students from other countries account for the lowest proportion at doctoral level (41.3%) and high school level (43.6%).
Every year, universities in the US enroll students in two main semesters: the Fall semester (from August to October) and the Spring semester (from January to February).
Yesterday, many students, parents, and counseling centers were surprised by the news that the US suddenly "froze" the scheduling of new student visa interviews for all foreign students.
This is a step in preparation for a new US regulation on comprehensive social media checks for foreign students. Previously, the US applied some social media checks, but mostly aimed at students returning to the US and those who may have participated in protests against the war in the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, spokesman for the US Embassy in Vietnam Cameron Thomas-Shah confirmed to the press that visa applicants can still continue to submit their applications. “Consular sections are constantly adjusting their schedules to ensure there is sufficient time to thoroughly review previous cases,” he informed.
In this context, study abroad companies advise candidates to wait patiently, because it is likely that the suspension of issuing student visa interview appointments is due to technical adjustments to the system, in order to check the applicants’ social media accounts. Candidates should review their social media accounts and update their own information and photos, according to experts.
