Many mechanical manufacturing technologies have been adopted and mastered by Vietnamese enterprises, but there are still many limitations in terms of capital and technology, requiring support from the State.

On December 9, Industry and Trade Magazine organized a seminar on "Diversifying markets, developing mechanical products". According to Dr. Phan Dang Phong - Director of the Institute of Mechanical Research, the domestic mechanical market has had very positive changes in both quantity and quality.
Vietnamese enterprises can master difficult technology
For example, in the field of automobile and motorbike manufacturing, up to now, automobile and motorbike assembly lines have mostly been undertaken by foreign units such as Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, etc. However, since 2012, by focusing on training human resources and receiving technology transfer from Japanese and Korean units, the institute has become autonomous in designing and manufacturing automobile assembly lines. Typically, we have recently succeeded in applying the line to produce and assemble Vinfast cars and the assembly lines have been put into operation, contributing to the launch of a number of car models such as VF7, VF8, VF3, etc. "This is a success and demonstrates that Vietnamese people and Vietnamese enterprises are completely capable of mastering difficult tasks that have previously been the privilege of foreign contractors," said Mr. Phong. In the field of renewable energy, the institute has also received technology transfer to implement buoy and anchor systems for solar power projects. In particular, the project implemented is Da Mi solar power with a capacity of 47.5 MW, followed by Tam Bo and Gia Hoet projects. In the field of production, some innovative applications, assembling the entire automation system including production to loading and unloading, transporting goods for Lix Detergent Joint Stock Company under Vietnam Chemical Group (Vinachem) have been implemented, helping to reduce risks in production and increase labor productivity.
However, Mr. Phong said that domestic mechanical enterprises only meet about 30% of the market's equipment needs. Especially in the field of complete equipment, such as thermal power plants, hydropower plants, new energy plants, renewable energy plants, cement plants or raw material production plants... The reason is that the mechanical industry does not have "leading crane" enterprises to own source technologies, have enough capacity and experience to carry out turnkey projects. For example, in the field of urban railways and gas power plants, enterprises do not have enough capacity to be general contractors or turnkey projects.
More support needed for mechanical businesses
Recognizing this situation, Mr. Nguyen Duc Cuong - Vice President of the Hanoi Supporting Industry Association - said that there are still limited Vietnamese mechanical enterprises with names and brands. Most Vietnamese enterprises are suppliers of components and spare parts for FDI enterprises in the electronics, printers, washing machines, automobiles, motorbikes, etc. industries. "If there is a source of investment capital without interest, Vietnamese enterprises will have opportunities. When I went to Japan, they also had similar sources of capital and directly supported enterprises. Along with that is support in technology to gradually increase automation, in-depth investment in research and design" - Mr. Phong said. Mr. Cao Van Hung - Director of International Market Development, Smart Vietnam Precision Mechanical Company - said that in recent years, Vietnamese enterprises have benefited greatly from the wave of shifting from international markets. Especially companies that want to withdraw from China and diversify their supply chains and shift to Vietnam. In fact, at Smart Vietnam, this year's revenue increased by 260-280% thanks to the sudden increase in demand from customers for mechanical products. In particular, the enterprise has invested heavily in sales, research and development, but still needs state policies to support investment in modern machinery and equipment, reduce competitive costs... "However, we hope that current policies for enterprises will be simplified, or we will have a mechanism to help enterprises access capital more easily" - Mr. Hung expressed.
