According to Travel+Leisure , for many people, retirement means having more time to pursue their hobbies and passions; while others expressed their views on moving to another country after retirement, whether for adventure, a change of scenery, or to reduce the cost of living.

Additionally, weather, location, access to health care, language, visa and financial requirements are all factors to consider when deciding where to live in retirement.

Travel+Leisure analyzed data from Numbeo (a database specializing in statistics on the cost of living index in cities and countries around the world through surveys) updated as of May 2024, to compare the cost of living and come up with a list of 8 livable countries with suitable costs for retirees.

Located in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has a very affordable cost of living. In particular, adventurous retirees appreciate Vietnam's beaches, scenery, cuisine, history and culture.

The total cost of living here is about 59.3% lower than in the US and rent is about 78.5% lower depending on location.

Ho Chi Minh City is home to the largest expat community, with a cost of living about 69.9% lower than New York and housing costs about 87.4% lower.
