Every year, the Stroke Center (Bach Mai Hospital) receives and treats thousands of stroke patients in the North. At peak times, the unit receives nearly 60 patients, many of whom are young.
Up to now, the Center has been able to perform advanced techniques in the world. Techniques that are routinely performed include: thrombolysis, mechanical thrombectomy, decompression craniectomy for patients with cerebral ischemic stroke, craniotomy to remove hematoma, specialized brain resuscitation techniques such as ventricular drainage, intracranial pressure monitoring, cerebral oxygen measurement...
In particular, there are new methods that allow for expanded treatment of stroke patients within the first 24 hours.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Mai Duy Ton, Director of the Stroke Center at Bach Mai Hospital, many stroke patients have achieved good treatment results and returned to work as usual.
Associate Professor Ton said that stroke often occurs in the elderly, people with underlying diseases such as blood pressure, blood fat, diabetes...
With factors such as blood pressure, blood fat, diabetes, obesity, smoking habits... stroke is also at risk of occurring in young people.
Therefore, Associate Professor Ton made 3 recommendations for screening and preventing stroke in both young people and other groups as follows:
- Everyone should exercise regularly, control weight, give up smoking and unhealthy eating habits.
- Screening for stroke risk factors: cardiovascular, blood pressure, blood lipids, diabetes...
- When there are any symptoms of stroke (reduced vision, weak limbs, slurred speech/difficulty speaking, headache, dizziness, etc.), the patient should be taken immediately to a stroke treatment unit for timely diagnosis and treatment.
