From February 5-14, at the UN headquarters in New York (USA), the 62nd Session of the Commission on Social Development (CSocD) took place with the theme "Promoting development and social equity through social policies to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and achieve poverty eradication goals".

The meeting was attended by representatives of UN member countries and relevant international organizations.

According to VNA correspondents at the UN, at the meeting, many opinions stated that the process of promoting development and social justice is being significantly affected by global challenges such as conflicts, climate change, economic instability, etc.

This situation shows the need to step up national and international efforts to strengthen the provision of core social services, social security support, high-quality health care andeducation at affordable costs for all people.

Speaking at the meeting on February 12, Minister Counsellor Le Thi Minh Thoa, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, reaffirmed Vietnam's strong commitment to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, while emphasizing that Vietnam's priority is to build an inclusive, equitable, and self-reliant society where no one is left behind.

Based on that orientation, Vietnam has implemented a series of policies on education, social security, and poverty reduction, thereby achieving specific achievements such as reducing the multidimensional poverty rate in 2022 from 9.2% to 4.3%, increasing the average income of poor households by 230% over the same period, and raising the literacy rate and the rate of children going to school at the right age to over 90%.

Regarding the environment, Vietnam is committed to not trading the environment for economic growth, persistently implementing the goal of net zero emissions by 2050, especially by participating in and implementing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

The representative of Vietnam assessed that the implementation of development and social equity goals still faces many challenges due to limited resources. This requires strengthening international cooperation in capacity building and technical assistance for developing countries like Vietnam to promote the common goals of development and social equity.

The Commission for Social Development (CSocD) was established in 1946 with the function of advising the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on overall social policy, especially in social areas beyond the scope of the specialized UN agencies.

Since 1995, CSocD has been the key UN agency responsible for and monitoring the implementation of the Declaration and Programme of Action of the 1995 Copenhagen World Summit on Social Development.

Since 2006, CSocD has been selecting themes for its regular meetings in February each year in New York.

CSocD currently has 46 members, elected according to the number allocated to each region for a term of 4 years.
