Vietnam Airlines was officially established on April 20, 1993, with the core of Flight Crew 919, Flight Attendants, and aircraft maintenance, ground services, and in-flight catering enterprises. Since its early years, Vietnam Airlines has been oriented to become a pioneer in the development of the civil aviation industry, a spearhead of the economy , serving domestic socio-economic development as well as expanding cooperation with foreign countries.

Over 30 years of development, Vietnam Airlines has transported more than 300 million passengers, approximately 4.5 million tons of cargo on 1.6 million flights, reaching a revenue of 1.1 million billion VND and contributing more than 65,300 billion VND to the state budget. Vietnam Airlines has always affirmed its position as the leader of the Vietnamese civil aviation industry, constantly developing to reach the regional and world level. The airline has contributed to the national economic development and social security by creating tens of thousands of stable jobs in the fields of air transport, cargo transport and support fields.

From operating less than 20 aircraft with a revenue of over VND900 billion in 1993, by 2019, before the Covid pandemic, the airline had operated more than 100 new-generation modern aircraft with a revenue of over VND103,000 billion, more than 100 times higher than 30 years ago. These are proud numbers and a journey of continuous efforts to develop and improve the National Airline.

Flights with the lotus symbol have spread their wings on more than 100 routes connecting 1,150 global destinations in the airline's network and the SkyTeam airline alliance, covering all 22 domestic airports and 33 airports in 18 countries around the world. Throughout its development journey, the national airline is proud to be a bridge of trade, tourism and culture between Vietnam and the world.

Vietnam Airlines was awarded a 4-star airline certificate by the British airline rating and rating organization Skytrax in 2016, becoming the first and only airline in Vietnam to achieve this certification. The certification affirms that Vietnam Airlines' services meet international standards and are equivalent to those of major airlines in the world. At the same time, the airline is constantly upgrading its services, enhancing the flight experience for passengers, aiming to become a 5-star international airline.

Not only in transportation activities, throughout its history of formation and development, Vietnam Airlines has successfully completed diplomatic, political and citizen protection tasks assigned by the Party, State and people. The airline has carried out safe, thoughtful and respectful flights transporting leaders of the Party, State, Government and National Assembly over the past decades. Vietnam Airlines has pioneered and participated in many major campaigns of the Government in transporting citizens abroad back to the country when there are natural disasters, epidemics and political conflicts such as establishing an air bridge to evacuate workers in Libya in 2011 and 2014; supporting Vietnamese people to return home during the earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011; bringing passengers out of Europe due to a volcanic eruption in 2010; rescuing passengers stranded in Thailand due to the political crisis in 2008; transporting Vietnamese citizens back from the Middle East due to the war between Israel and Lebanon in 2006...
