This event marks an important step in the strategy of developing VIMC Lines’ inland coastal transport network, while contributing to the completion of the supply chain in the Mekong Delta region, the largest agricultural and aquatic product production and export center in the country. With a frequency of 2 trips/week, combining river and sea routes, the Mekong Express route helps shorten the transportation time from 48 hours to 15 hours, a reduction of nearly 70% compared to the traditional method.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Le Quang Trung - Deputy General Director of VIMC, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Can Tho Port emphasized: “VIMC is proud to be the unit implementing and directly operating the Mekong Express route, a service that will enhance the efficiency and reliability of the domestic logistics industry in Vietnam. The cooperation between VIMC Lines and DP World Vietnam in developing this service route demonstrates the shared commitment of both parties to continuously improve and bring new solutions to Vietnamese customers. We look forward to continuing to expand international cooperation to create more value for businesses and enhance the resilience of the national supply chain.”
Also present and speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Glen Hilton – General Director of Asia Pacific of DP World – said: “DP World is committed to building an integrated, seamless supply chain ecosystem in Vietnam – an increasingly important market in the Asia Pacific region as well as globally. With the Mekong Express, we are meeting the demand for an efficient and reliable service. This transport route will contribute to promoting economic development not only in the Southern region but also throughout Vietnam. The opening of this new coastal logistics route also marks an important step in our strategy to expand operations in Vietnam, complementing the existing operations at SPCT Container Terminal.”
The Mekong Express route is designed to flexibly meet the demand for dry and refrigerated cargo transportation, with a capacity of up to hundreds of TEUs per trip, including receiving a large number of refrigerated containers - a key factor strongly supporting the increasingly developing cold supply chain in the Western region, thereby enhancing connectivity between key economic regions in the South. In the upcoming plan, the route will be expanded with stops at DP World's SPCT Port and Vietnam National Shipping Lines' Saigon Hiep Phuoc Port. In addition, the Mekong Express route also contributes to connecting the Mekong Delta region with VIMC Lines' transport service network in domestic areas such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Quy Nhon, Ho Chi Minh City, ... and international areas such as Kolkata-India, Port Klang-Malaysia.
Not only optimizing time and cost, Mekong Express also aims for sustainable development. The service route uses water transport to reduce CO₂ emissions by more than 60% compared to road transport. Real-time cargo and emissions monitoring systems are integrated to aim for carbon neutrality by 2026.
VIMC Lines’ direct operation of the Mekong Express route clearly demonstrates its important role in promoting the transformation of domestic logistics, contributing to the goal of reducing the proportion of road transport and realizing the Government’s orientation for developing inland waterway transport. At the same time, the event also marks a new development in the strategic cooperation relationship between VIMC Lines and DP World, opening the way for greener, more modern and innovative logistics projects in the future.
