Farewell to former Hai Phong Club President Tran Manh Hung, a special personality of Vietnamese football

Mr. Tran Manh Hung, former Chairman of Hai Phong Club, passed away this morning (August 29), at the age of 65. Mr. Hung held the position of Chairman of Hai Phong Club during the period 2014 - 2021, and was elected Vice Chairman of Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company.

During his 7 years in charge of Hai Phong Club, Mr. Tran Manh Hung's greatest achievement was the runner-up position in V-League 2016. That was the season when Hai Phong team, under the guidance of coach Truong Viet Hoang, competed with Hanoi for the championship until the last day.

Although not the champion, this is still an encouraging result for Hai Phong Club, when most of the team's players are "second-rate" players from other teams, patched together by Mr. Hung and coach Truong Viet Hoang.

Mr. Tran Manh Hung has 7 years of leadership of Hai Phong Club.

Previously in 2014, Hai Phong FC under the temporary leadership of coach Dylan Kerr also caused a shock when winning the National Cup (Mr. Kerr was appointed to replace coach Hoang Anh Tuan). To date, this remains the only title in nearly two decades for the port city team.

With a budget of about 40 billion VND/year from Hai Phong City, Mr. Tran Manh Hung's team has managed to survive in the V-League, with some high rankings in the seasons. After the runner-up position in 2016, Hai Phong Club ranked 7th and 6th in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, respectively.

The playing style of Hai Phong Club is also considered to be thorny and annoying. In the context of limited resources and having to constantly replace players every year, Mr. Hung and Hai Phong team have been somewhat successful.

However, it is unfortunate for Hai Phong FC that they could not take advantage of the momentum of their achievements in the 2016 - 2018 period to rise up. The port city team ranked 12th in V-League 2019, after a relegation race throughout the season. Coach Pham Anh Tuan took over the team.

In the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Hai Phong team did not play as well as expected and Mr. Hung left the position of Club President.

But in his 7 years in charge of Hai Phong Club, Mr. Tran Manh Hung has managed very well with limited resources, contributing to creating a team with color and personality. Good relationships, along with Mr. Tran Manh Hung's ability to "patch up" helped Hai Phong compete for the championship fairly in the 2016 season and have a good position in the 2014 - 2018 period, despite constantly changing the force, "eating on a dime" each season.

Mr. Tran Manh Hung is considered a very special personality in the flow of Vietnamese football, with strong and thorny statements. When holding an important position at Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company, Mr. Tran Manh Hung also made a certain mark!

Mr. Tran Manh Hung (with a very special nickname: Hung "fisherman") will always be a part of Hai Phong football history. A character with a rich personality, influence and uniqueness in Vietnamese football.
