“Uncle Ho’s soldiers” is a familiar, affectionate name, conveying all the people’s trust and pride in the army. This very Vietnamese way of calling makes the soldiers always close, attached to the people and clearly shows the working class nature of the army. “Uncle Ho’s soldiers” is a title, a great honor for the soldiers of the Vietnam People’s Army. In the late 40s of the 20th century, the phrase “Uncle Ho’s soldiers” appeared in our country Vietnam. At that time, the people in the Viet Bac War Zone called our armed units by the familiar, close name “Bo Doi Ong Ke”, or “Bo Doi Ong Cu” because they did not know Uncle Ho’s real name. This is the heart of the people of the Viet Bac ethnic groups for the revolution, for Uncle Ho and for the soldiers who were fighting to drive out the French colonialists to liberate their homeland. Since then, the phrase “Bo Doi Ong Ke”, “Bo Doi Ong Cu” has been renamed “Bo Doi Cu Ho” and spread throughout the country, becoming a loving name for the past 80 years for soldiers in the heroic Vietnam People’s Army. This is also a rare thing in world history since the beginning of the 20th century until now and has become a unique feature, carrying precious cultural values of our nation.
“Uncle Ho’s soldiers” is the affection, love and also the deep belief that our people have for the soldiers. In fact, in the world, almost no country has associated the image of soldiers with its most respected leader like our country. “Uncle Ho’s soldiers” can also be understood as soldiers who are fighting to wipe out foreign invaders, protect the Party, protect the people, and are descendants of President Ho Chi Minh . They carry with them the ideology, morality and style of Ho Chi Minh, which is to strive and sacrifice all their lives for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, the happiness of the people, to build the country to be increasingly rich and strong, standing shoulder to shoulder with the world powers. President Ho Chi Minh is the symbol of the indomitable fighting spirit of the Vietnamese people, the embodiment of the country’s belief and strength in the cause of liberation, gaining independence, freedom, happiness and prosperity for the Fatherland. Throughout his revolutionary life, he always paid special attention and had boundless love for the armed forces in general and the Vietnam People's Army in particular. Therefore, from the years of birth, to maturity, the victory and development of the army, were closely associated with the image of Uncle Ho, even when he was gone.
During his lifetime, President Ho Chi Minh affirmed that the decisive factor for the growth and victory of the Vietnam People's Army was: "Our army has invincible strength because it is a people's army built, led and educated by our Party". Since its establishment, our army has always been under the direct and absolute leadership in all aspects of the Communist Party of Vietnam. This leadership perspective has also been strengthened over the years, especially during the years of resistance to repel invaders, protecting the Fatherland in the new situation and international integration.
“Uncle Ho’s soldiers” consists of only four words, but contains an extremely profound cultural value, becoming an extremely precious tradition and a beautiful image of each soldier. Therefore, soldiers of the Vietnam People’s Army are always imbued with revolutionary ideals, studying and following Uncle Ho’s moral example and style. In the resistance wars to repel foreign invaders, as well as the wars to defend the Fatherland and in the period of integration and development of the country, our army has always been an army of the people, by the people and for the people. The people are always the foundation, the parents of the army, the object for the army to protect, serve and love unconditionally.

Previously, General Vo Nguyen Giap emphasized: “The image and name “Uncle Ho’s Army” are unique features in Vietnamese culture and the history of our nation’s struggle to build and defend the country”. During the years of resistance against French colonialism and American imperialism, as well as the wars to defend the Fatherland, the Vietnamese people have always deeply understood that only the revolutionary army, directly organized, led, educated and trained by the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh, is the army of the people, by the people and for the people, always ready to fight and sacrifice to protect the independence and sovereignty of the country, to protect the socialist regime, to protect the Party, the State, to protect the achievements of the revolution, to protect the lives, property and interests of the people. Therefore, the title “Uncle Ho’s Army” with its pure revolutionary qualities is a blend of the traditional cultural values of our nation in thousands of years of history of building and defending the country. "Uncle Ho's soldiers" always shine with revolutionary heroism, are the beautiful image of soldiers living in the hearts of the people, loved and protected by the people and always wholeheartedly serving the country and the people.
At the 10th Conference of the Central Military Commission to review and evaluate the results of leadership in implementing military and defense tasks in the first 6 months of the year, and deploy key tasks in the last 6 months of 2024, the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, former Secretary of the Central Military Commission, sent instructions to the conference, continuing to emphasize the principle of building a politically strong army: "Continuously improve leadership capacity, combat strength, maintain and strengthen the absolute and direct leadership in all aspects of the Party over the Army". The late General Secretary requested the army to continue to promote the study and follow of Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style through creative and appropriate models and methods; always maintain and promote the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers in the period of industrialization, modernization of the country and international integration. |
Adding to the glorious and heroic tradition
Over the past 80 years, our army has achieved many glorious feats of arms, always being the core force in the cause of national liberation struggle, protecting and building the socialist Fatherland of Vietnam. Our army not only has the task of training, being ready to fight and fight, but also being a production army and a working army. At any time, "Uncle Ho's soldiers" are self-reliant, self-reliant, resourceful, creative, brave and enthusiastic, excellently completing all assigned tasks. During the years of resistance against foreign invaders, as well as in the period of peace, consolidating and building the country, the officers and soldiers of the Vietnam People's Army were not only good at fighting, contributing to the building of the skillful Vietnamese military art, but also skillful people doing mass mobilization work, excellently fulfilling the functions of a fighting army, a working army and a production labor army. Therefore, “Uncle Ho’s soldiers” is the beauty of Vietnamese military culture with the good qualities and personalities of revolutionary soldiers, children of the people. That is also the typical beauty of Vietnamese culture, the soul, character, and personality of the Vietnamese people, close, affectionate, and peace-loving.
In recent years, “Uncle Ho’s soldiers” have been pioneers and leaders in the cause of protecting national sovereignty, refuting and opposing the reactionary and opposing ideologies that want to separate the army from the leadership of the Party, causing division in the great solidarity of the entire army, dividing the army from the police, dividing the army from the people by hostile and reactionary forces. During natural disasters, storms, floods, and epidemics, soldiers in the Vietnam People’s Army are always present in the most difficult and dangerous places. Wherever the Party needs or the people need, “Uncle Ho’s soldiers” are present. Every year, during the fierce storms and floods in the Central region, the Northwest, the Central Highlands and the South, we see images of soldiers wading in the storms, or rushing into the raging floods to save the lives and property of the people. They are also always ready to be present when our fishermen are in trouble at sea. In particular, during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, the army was present in the hottest and most dangerous spots. Whether in quarantine and blockade areas, in hospitals treating Covid-19 patients, soldiers of the main force, local forces or militia and self-defense forces all participated in any heavy and dangerous work. They even did things they had never done before: taking care of the funerals of those who unfortunately passed away from Covid-19. During those natural disasters and epidemics, many of our soldiers fell for the safety of people's lives and property. Their actions further enhanced the glorious and heroic tradition of the Vietnam People's Army, making the beauty of "Uncle Ho's Soldiers" even more sparkling and radiant.
In these days of December 2024, officers and soldiers in military units, or veterans, all show indescribable pride with many exciting emulation activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army, the 35th anniversary of the National Defense Day. They are proud to be soldiers called "Uncle Ho's soldiers" by the people. That pride will follow them throughout their lives, becoming a source of motivation and inspiration for each soldier to continue to study, strive to train well, worthy of the loving name that the Party and the people have given them. |
