The incident happened near Stockholm, Sweden, where a relative of the agent involved in the Gyokeres deal was caught up in a shooting at his home. The man was said to have bragged about receiving a share of the £64m transfer fee from Arsenal, a move that may have prompted the gunman to fire two shots in the Huddinge area, near Stockholm.
Police rushed to the scene after residents reported hearing gunshots. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
When contacted for an interview, a representative of Gyokeres said: “This is a very vulnerable industry, things like this happen often. But the recent shooting has nothing to do with me or football."
Sporting Lisbon president Frederico Varandas insists that “no blackmail or insult could have forced him to agree to the sale of Gyokeres to Arsenal”.
Gyokeres is under contract with HCM agency. HC is the initials of the company's chairman, Hasan Cetinkaya. Swedish media claim that this HCM agency "has links to criminal organizations".
Per Engstrom, head of the Swedish police investigation department, said criminals had targeted football agency companies in recent years because they handled large sums of money. “We have been warning about this for a long time. Criminals are mainly using young people to carry out their crimes,” he said.
