Nature's favor

In the last days of the year, walking along the right dike of Bach Dang river, brackish water aquaculture ponds in Nam Trieu ward, Hai Phong city, people are busy harvesting shrimp and fish.

Mr. Le Van Vinh's aquaculture pond is 7,500 m2 wide, all ponds are drained of water to catch shrimp and fish. Mr. Vinh said that before, his family only raised sea bass, but recently they have diversified their aquaculture to raise more aquatic species for higher income. As soon as fish and shrimp are caught, traders come to buy them all, transporting them to all over the city and outside for consumption.

According to the Head of the Economic Department of Nam Trieu Ward, Pham Van Khai, there are currently more than 100 households raising aquatic products outside the Bach Dang River dike in the ward. Households have been raising aquatic products in this area for more than 20 years, before there were some plans to develop some local socio-economic, security and defense projects. Most households raise brackish water fish. Some households raise a combination of giant freshwater prawns, bald scad, etc.

The local farming area has the advantage of an alluvial area with brackish water for aquaculture of better quality than many other areas. Together with the local people's experience in aquaculture, the productivity and quality of shrimp and fish are always the best in the North.

Here, people can raise sea bass with an average yield of 60 - 70 tons/ha, some households raise a yield of 80 - 90 tons/ha while the average yield of sea bass in the northern provinces is only 15 - 20 tons/ha. Black carp in the lagoons here reaches 50 tons/ha, while in other provinces it only reaches an average of 20 tons/ha. Each year, the locality sells about 7,000 tons of grass carp and 3,000 tons of sea bass.

In particular, farmers here bring black carp and sea bass, which are used to living in freshwater, to raise in brackish water, bringing surprising results. High productivity, delicious and fragrant fish meat, different from similar products raised in other provinces and cities.

Aquaculture farmers along the Bach Dang River dike can achieve the highest product quality and productivity in the North.

Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Nam Trieu Ward Tran Van Tuyen affirmed that the people of Lap Le in the past, now Nam Trieu Ward, have strengths in aquaculture. Although the brackish water source along the river brings advantages, the quickness and dynamism of the people in choosing suitable shrimp and fish species to raise has brought high economic value.

Mr. Dinh Van Han has 21 years of aquaculture experience and was the first person to bring basa fish and some freshwater fish to raise in this area. "At first, people here only raised sea bass, but understanding the market demand, households switched to raising black carp, basa fish, and tilapia. Black carp raised in brackish water has delicious meat, so many people in Vu Dai village, Ninh Binh province buy it to store and sell throughout the country," said Mr. Han.

Change career accordingly

Aquaculture lagoons bring high economic value. Many people invest heavily in building infrastructure to raise fish and shrimp, but are currently worried that this area is stuck in some planning issues.

According to the Dragon Eye Aquaculture Cooperative, the aquaculture area of the local people here is about 250 hectares. In the near future, this area will be reduced by more than 200 hectares due to projects planning the fishing port system, storm shelters for fishing boats in the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050 (89 hectares); national defense projects (23.95 hectares), green belt planning (more than 100 hectares).

Mr. Nguyen Duc Van, Director of Mat Rong Aquaculture Cooperative, said that aquaculture households are doing business effectively but are facing difficulties due to local socio-economic development, defense and security planning.

Many aquaculture ponds in the Bach Dong river dike area, with billions of dong invested, are currently stuck in planning projects.

According to Vice Chairman of Nam Trieu Ward People's Committee Nguyen Trong Tuan, recently, the locality has heard many opinions reflecting that most of the aquaculture area is in the city's socio-economic development, security and defense planning, affecting people's livelihoods. In the long term, the locality will guide people to change to other jobs when the city implements the above projects. However, while the projects have not been implemented, people want to continue to create conditions for farming, avoiding land waste.
