The Big Buddha Temple , or Wat Phra Yai, was built in 1972 on a small island called Koh Faan, just north of Koh Samui. It is connected to the main island by a sturdy bridge, making it convenient for tourists and pilgrims to travel. The name “Phra Yai” in Thai means “Great Buddha,” which accurately reflects the temple’s most prominent feature – a towering statue of the meditating Buddha Shakyamuni, looking out over the vast ocean.

Not only a spiritual destination in Koh Samui, Wat Phra Yai also plays an important role in the religious life of local people. On the occasions of Buddha's birthday, Songkran or big full moon days, thousands of believers flock here to pray, burn incense and participate in traditional rituals.

What makes Wat Phra Yai one of the most beautiful temples in Koh Samui is the exquisite combination of traditional architecture and beautiful natural space. The 12-meter-high Buddha statue is placed on a high tower, surrounded by a railing of winding Naga dragons - a familiar symbol in Southeast Asian Buddhist culture.

When standing from afar, the image of the Buddha statue stands out against the sky and sea, making the whole area radiate a sacred and attractive energy. The golden color of the statue when illuminated by the sunlight at dawn or dusk makes this place a favorite stop for photographers, spiritual believers and tourists everywhere.

In addition to the main Buddha statue, the temple grounds also have many small shrines, ancient bells, guardian statues and paintings depicting the life of Buddha – creating a spiritual space in the middle of nature.
