On June 21, the World Bank (WB) announced an additional financial aid package worth 1.75 billion USD for Ukraine.
According to the WB, the above amount includes a loan worth 500 million USD guaranteed by the UK, a non-refundable aid of 1.25 billion USD from the US Government and a grant of 15 million USD from the Finnish Government.
The new support package is intended to help Ukraine maintain its ability to provide critical services and basic government functions at multiple levels, including health care, education , pension payments, social protection programs, and worker wages.
World Bank CEO Anna Bjerde said the package was needed to help Ukraine meet its 2023 financing needs.
She affirmed that the WB and its partners will continue to support Ukraine using all financial instruments.
To date, the World Bank's total aid to Ukraine has amounted to nearly $35 billion.
Previously, on June 21, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a new economic aid package - 1.3 billion USD - for Ukraine to help this Eastern European country rebuild the country.
Secretary of State Blinken made the statement while speaking at the Ukraine Reconstruction Conference in London, England, with the participation of more than 1,000 officials from both the public and private sectors.
According to him, $657 million of the new aid will be used to upgrade railways, ports, border crossings and other infrastructure to help Ukraine expand trade with Europe.
Another $520 million will help Ukraine improve its energy grid, much of which was destroyed during the conflict.
The remaining amount, about $100 million, will support Ukraine in upgrading customs services, including transitioning to digital technology to improve transparency in trade.
Previously, since the conflict in Ukraine broke out in February 2022, the US has provided 63 billion USD to Ukraine, of which about 40 billion USD is in the form of weapons and other security assistance.
On the same day, June 21, the European Union (EU) also agreed to add 3.5 billion euros to the European Peace Mechanism (EPF), a fund used to provide military aid to Ukraine, as the union continues to support Kiev.
Sweden, which holds the rotating EU presidency, said the EPF supplement was given the green light at a conference in Brussels, Belgium.
The EPF was established in 2021 to support partner countries around the world. The 27 EU member states have spent around €5.5 billion from the fund to provide weapons to Ukraine.
Initially, the EU expected the EPF budget to reach 5 billion euros in 2027. However, this ceiling was increased once, by 2 billion euros, in December 2022. The EU decided to continue adding 3.5 billion euros to the EPF.
Meanwhile, speaking at the Reconstruction Conference of Ukraine, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said the country needs more than 6 billion USD in the next 12 months to help rebuild the country./.
