According to StatCounter , as of July, Windows 11 has officially surpassed Windows 10 to become the most popular version of Windows. This success comes after 4 years of Windows 11's launch. With Windows 10's support coming to an end, Windows 11's growth has really accelerated in recent months.

Specifically, data from StatCounter shows that Windows 11 currently accounts for 50.88% of the Windows operating system market share (about 700 million monthly active devices), significantly outperforming Windows 10, which has dropped to 46.2%. Despite being launched in 2021, Windows 11 will only reach less than 10% market share in 2022.

Since then, Windows 11 has experienced slow but steady growth, from 18% to 28% in 2023, then continuing to reach 36% in 2024. However, it was this year that Windows 11 really took off, possibly because Microsoft is stepping up its announcement of Windows 10's end of support.

Windows 10 will officially stop supporting on October 14. Recently, Microsoft made an important announcement: Windows 10 users will receive an additional year of free security updates if they sign in to their Microsoft account and back up their PC settings to the cloud.

Still, Microsoft aims to encourage as many users as possible to switch to Windows 11. Experts are closely watching to see whether the move to provide an extra year of free security updates for Windows 10 will slow down Windows 11's impressive growth.

Notably, in the gaming community, Windows 11 has recently emerged as the most popular operating system on the Steam platform.

Windows 11 has been a controversial release for a number of reasons. It's the first time in years that a version of Windows has significantly increased system requirements, leaving a large number of Windows 10 users ineligible to upgrade.

This forces users who want to upgrade to buy new computers. In all likelihood, older Windows 10 computers, which are 10 years old this year, are slowly becoming obsolete.

Windows 11 is also the first version that requires users to have a Microsoft account and an internet connection right from the installation stage. This process includes downloading and installing the latest updates before users can use the computer. In addition, the amount of advertising and junk software pre-installed on Windows 11 is also a point that makes users dissatisfied.

However, it's worth noting that most of these ads and bloatware were already present on Windows 10. Therefore, users upgrading to Windows 11 probably won't notice a significant difference.

Windows 11 is available as a free upgrade for Windows 10 PCs that meet the system requirements. If your device is not compatible, Microsoft recommends that you consider buying a new PC.
