In a release on Wednesday (June 11), Pitch Marketing Group calculated that the 2026 World Cup will become the most lucrative sporting event ever, with expected revenue exceeding $10 billion.
The tournament will run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with 48 teams competing in 104 matches across 16 cities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. In its first expansion, Pitch Marketing Group predicts a global audience of more than 5 billion people, nearly two-thirds of the world’s population.
In addition, combined interactions across all forms of media are estimated at more than 700 billion. This is because FIFA and the three co-hosting nations have the ambition to turn the 2026 World Cup into "a moment of global convergence, with sport, technology, music, culture, media, politics and identity coming together on an unprecedented scale".
In recent interviews, everyone from the UK mobile network EE, global music streaming service Spotify to online video platform YouTube have said the 2026 World Cup will be “the biggest cultural phenomenon in history,” with a bigger impact than any previous sporting event. Or a study by financial analysis firm OpenEconomics that the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and especially the 2026 World Cup will add $62 billion to global economic output.
On FIFA's side, it is expected to generate $13 billion in revenue over the 2023-2026 four-year cycle, which of course includes revenue from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2023 Women's World Cup. This impressive figure is more than double the 2015-2018 four-year cycle and nearly 75% higher than the $7.5 billion generated in the 2019-2022 cycle.
