In recent days, many farmers in Phuong Binh commune, Phung Hiep district, have focused on planting the 2023-2024 winter-spring rice crop. To improve production efficiency, local authorities have developed a crop calendar, rice variety structure, and recommended appropriate production solutions to the people.
Mr. Nguyen Van Vien's rice field in Phuong Quoi A hamlet has been planted for nearly a month and is growing well.
Up to now, the whole commune has planted 1,573/1,753.3 hectares of winter-spring rice, reaching 89.72% of the local rice area. Of which, 1,100 hectares are in the seedling stage, more than 400 hectares are in the tillering stage. Some areas do not have closed dykes and do not have proactive irrigation water, so people have not been able to plant rice in time for the crop schedule. Currently, people are actively cleaning the fields, preparing to complete the planting of the remaining area.
Mr. Nguyen Van Vien, in Phuong Quoi A hamlet, Phuong Binh commune, said: “I sow rice in accordance with the local schedule for each crop to avoid planthoppers and pests. My family has about 18,200m2 of rice land, and has sown rice for nearly a month. In recent years, thanks to the application of technical measures in production, costs have been greatly reduced. I have also switched to row sowing instead of hand sowing, because the amount of rice seeds is reduced by about 8kg/cong compared to before.”
In Phuong Binh commune, the rice varieties chosen by many farmers for planting are Dai Thom 8, OM18... Of which, Dai Thom 8 variety accounts for 90%, because after several cultivation seasons, it has been shown that this variety is suitable for local soil conditions, has high yield and is purchased by many traders.
Some local sowing techniques include transplanting (seed quantity 40-70kg/ha), row sowing, sowing by sprayer (seed quantity 70-80kg/ha) and hand sowing (seed quantity from 100-150kg/ha). However, this winter-spring crop, most people choose the method of sowing in rows or sowing by sprayer instead of hand sowing. This method helps save seeds compared to the traditional sowing method. Not only does it save seeds, but fertilizers and pesticides are also reduced because the rice has fewer pests and diseases, reducing the incidence of lodging when the rice is ripe, so the yield and quality of the rice are very high.
However, this winter-spring rice crop, people still face some difficulties in sowing seeds. Currently, some rice production areas are not closed, there are no pumping stations, so concentrated sowing cannot be done. However, in general, this year the water level is not high, the weather conditions are also favorable, so there has not been any damage during the sowing process.
Together with farmers, Phuong Binh Commune People's Committee promptly directed the Agricultural Technical Team to widely announce the sowing schedule to the people, recommending that people sow simultaneously, following the local schedule to avoid planthoppers; prepare the land, clean the fields, and use certified rice varieties for sowing. In addition, it is recommended that people sow sparsely to save costs, limit pests and diseases, especially limit spraying pesticides when the rice is less than 40 days old to protect natural enemies in the fields. In addition, regularly update and inform farmers in the commune about weather developments and agricultural weather bulletins.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong, Vice Chairman of Phuong Binh Commune People's Committee, said: In general, in the 2023-2024 winter-spring rice crop, farmers are very excited because the price of commercial rice is at the highest level compared to many years, ranging from 8,000-8,400 VND/kg for Dai Thom 8 rice; 8,900 VND/kg for RVT rice. At the same time, when farmers sowed, the weather conditions were relatively favorable, so the rice crop was growing and developing well.
“The Commune People's Committee also makes good use of the support policy for rice growers according to Decree 62/2029/ND-CP of the Government to promptly support people in accordance with regulations. In the coming time, the Commune People's Committee will continue to direct the Commune Agricultural Technical Team to regularly visit the fields to monitor the growth and development of rice plants. Monitor the situation of harmful organisms in the fields and provide timely and effective pest control measures to farmers. The goal is to reduce production costs, limit risks, contribute to increasing productivity and increasing profits in rice cultivation for farmers in the commune," Mr. Phuong added.
