According to China's state television CCTV, the incident occurred at around 1 PM on February 22nd at an open-pit mine managed by Xinjing Coal Company, resulting in 6 deaths and 47 missing people. Nearly 1,000 people, along with numerous vehicles and machinery, have been mobilized for the search and rescue operation.
Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is one of China's largest coal-producing areas. Mining accidents have occurred in the country in the past. Most recently, in December 2022, an underground gold mine in Xinjiang, northwestern China, collapsed while approximately 40 workers were on the job. In 2021, a coal mine in Shanxi province was flooded, killing two miners and rescuing 20 others.
