Electric car sets record for running continuously for 7 days
At the Nardo racetrack in Italy, the Mercedes-AMG GT XX, the concept model that preceded the AMG GT EV, achieved an unprecedented feat: completing a distance of 40,075 km in 7 days, 13 hours, 24 minutes and 7 seconds, equivalent to the circumference of the Earth.
Not only that, the team continued to drive to overcome 40,233 km in 7 days 14 hours 9 minutes 52 seconds, setting a new milestone for the electric vehicle industry.
The four-door electric sedan travels continuously at a speed of 299 km/h, stopping only for fast charging at 850 kW. The achievement helps Mercedes break the old record of XPeng P7 (2,521 km/24h) by reaching 5,479 km in 24 hours.
Breaking 26 world records
During the eight-day journey, the team of 17 drivers took turns at the wheel, almost non-stop. As a result, the GT XX EV set 26 secondary records, including the longest distance in 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144 and 168 hours.
Time | Distance traveled (km) |
---|---|
12 hours | 2,749,924 |
24 hours (1 day) | 5,478,881 |
48 hours (2 days) | 10,859,526 |
72 hours (3 days) | 16,250,444 |
96 hours (4 days) | 21,632,451 |
120 hours (5 days) | 26,807,575 |
144 hours (6 days) | 32,099,133 |
168 hours (7 days) | 37,259,955 |
Mercedes equips the GT XX with an NCMA (Nickel – Cobalt – Manganese – Aluminum) battery pack with an energy density of 300 Wh/kg, consisting of more than 3,000 cells. A non-conductive oil cooling system helps control the temperature of each cell, allowing the car to maintain a charging capacity of 850 kW without losing performance.
As a result, with just 5 minutes of charging, the car can travel about 399 km, completely resolving concerns about operating range and charging time.
The GT XX concept features three oil-cooled Yasa electric motors, delivering a total output of over 1,300 horsepower. The two rear-mounted motors combine the transmission and inverter in a single housing, while the front motors act as boosters when needed, providing exceptional acceleration and performance.
Although it is a concept car, the GT XX is considered the closest test car to the upcoming four-door Mercedes-AMG GT production model. The battery technology, super-fast charging system and high-performance electric motor are expected to be inherited, before spreading to cheaper Mercedes-Benz models in the future.
