Many serious safety allegations

The MG car brand is facing serious questions about the safety of its electric vehicles, after a series of incidents involving uncontrolled acceleration were recorded in Europe. These incidents raised concerns among the user community about the reliability of the electronic control systems on the company's vehicles.

Latest incident involving MG5 EV

According to The Guardian, an MG5 owner in the UK recently encountered a worrying incident. After charging at a motorway stop, their electric wagon suddenly became completely unresponsive. The owner had to call the AA rescue service for assistance.

It is worth noting that when the rescue worker tried to back the car into the transport truck, the MG5 suddenly accelerated forward and collided with the rescue vehicle. The report said that the wheels continued to spin even after the car stopped. A technician had to intervene from outside to turn off the electrical system. The car was later concluded to be "unsafe to operate".

MG initially charged owners more than $600 for the inspection. However, after The Guardian got involved, the company conducted a 40km test drive and claimed that “no malfunctions were found in the vehicle’s systems.” The company said the problem could have been caused by “external factors” and refunded the inspection fee to the customer.

The same error happened with MG ZS EV

This isn’t the first time MG electric cars have been caught up in similar allegations. In 2023, the BBC reported a serious incident involving an MG ZS EV. A 53-year-old driver in Glasgow, Brian Morrison, said his car’s accelerator got stuck and he lost all braking power while traveling at around 30 mph.

MG ZS EV, another model of the company, has also been accused of having an uncontrolled acceleration error in 2023.

To stop the out-of-control car, police had to instruct Mr. Morrison to deliberately bump the rear of the patrol car. After the incident, technicians discovered “a series of errors in the system log” and refused to restart the car for safety reasons.

Demand for transparency from manufacturers

Neither incident resulted in any injuries, but has raised serious concerns about the safety of MG’s electronic systems. With sales of the brand growing strongly in the UK, the incidents have raised urgent demands for transparency and accountability from the manufacturer.

Some experts have called on authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into potential errors, rather than leaving consumers to face possible risks due to software or control system errors.
